Hand in Hand!
"Those that can do. Those that cannot teach!"
What about those that have to do both?
BMW R1200RT, the flying, heated 300kg armchair.
I almost had my baby in the car. (The doctor kept insisting that I wait, even after I went in to her office in the morning, and then called her again when I woke up that evening--an hour before giving birth. Finally, my husband said, "I don't care what that doctor says, we're going to the hospital.") We live only five minutes drive from the hospital, but a police officer pulled him over when we were in enroute. When my husband told him why he was rushing, the officer led us to the hospital in his cruiser (we were able to drive through every red light, thanks to him). I still didn't make it to the delivery room in time, but at least I made it to the entrance of the ER and on to a stretcher. I had the baby while my husband was parking the car. (Sad thing is, I didn't send a thank you or anything for several years...It didn't occur to me to do it until later...and that officer really did respond quickly and well.)
This isn't exactly on the same page as the rest of the stories but I thought I would share.
My city has an annual festival every year, complete with a carnival, bands, fireworks, etc. It draws people from the surrounding communities by the thousands. A few years ago I was there with some friends knocking a couple back at one of the beer tents and listening to the music.
As I was standing there with a good female friend, the cutest little girl in the world, probably about 4 years of age, tugged on my friends pants and asked "have you seen my mommy?".
We scanned the area and didn't see anyone looking for a lost child, so I left the little girl with my friend while I went and found a police officer. He took her to the police trailer set up for the event.
About an hour later I ran into the officer in another area of the park and asked if they had found the little girls mother. He said, with a very dismayed look, that they had. She was at home - 20 miles away. The woman had gotten so drunk that she left and didn't even realize she had left her child behind. How she drove herself that far was beyond both of us. He said they had contacted a sober relative to get the child, and she would be investigated for child neglect. He also thanked me and referenced the obvious possibility that some "freak" might have found this child.
I felt a bit of pride in the situation, but at the same time a lot of anger towards the irresponsible parent. Probably a good thing I'm not a police officer... I would have been knocking some heads![]()
These are great stories!
Y'all should print this thread and put it somewhere where you can easily lay hands on it, for those times when you wonder if it is possible to make any difference at all.
