    Police Cruiser Standards

    Hi everyone,

I'm a marketing student in Massachusetts. I'm taking part of a fictional marketing plan to sell the Carbon Motors E7. I don't want to sound like I'm actually working for them, so I'm not going to link to them but I'm sure most of you have heard of it already.

I'm currently at a stage where I need to research what the criteria and requirements are for police cruisers. Mileage, costs, life span, size of interior/trunk, things of that nature. I'm not sure where to start, I don't even know if there is a national set of standards or if it depends on the department.

I'm not asking to give me a pre-made list, but I was wondering if anyone could help point me in the right direction to start my search. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

This can really vary by both state and local laws, plus department policies. I would take an educated guess that when marketing police vehicles, most car makers will be a bit flexible to adjust to local standards. I don't believe there is a national standard though.

In Florida, the only standard I'm aware of in state law is the paint that goes on them. Sheriff's office's can only have certain colors, PD's can only have certain colors, and FHP is only allowed Black and Tan on their marked units. However, each department may have their own requirements as to equipment, engine specs, etc. Most of the time, COST drives most of those decisions.

Hmm, that's what I was afraid of. Makes my research more difficult, but that's OK.
