Arizona officials arrest man in 1982 Phoenix cold case
Scumbag was already in prison. Had other SA convictions. Hopefully death penalty will be in his future for this rape and murder 30 years ago.

DNA is great stuff. A couple of years ago I went back to court to testify in one of my old homicides where they arrested a guy strictly on DNA. He was a stranger to the victim and someone we never heard of nor knew anything about.
It's also scary when they find some person innocent via DNA. We think we're so good and then that happens. Thankfully, never in one of my cases......

I read a story a while back that the county prosecutor was using retired police homicide detectives part-time to go through their cold-case files. I think they were all part-time and picked the cases they wanted. It seemed like a great retirement gig if you liked police work but not all the hassle..........![]()

Pffft. I got a letter a couple of years ago inviting me back to work some cold case homicides. It sounded like fun until I got to the bottom where it said that they wouldn't be able to pay me anything at all. One point two seconds into the trash can.
What really annoys me is that they're paying retired detectives $75K to come back and work IA complaints. Gives you an idea where their priorities are....

They are real paid positions here I believe. This is the division that runs Maricopa County's cold case squad.

I look at it like I look at reserves, they're getting someone to do work for free where they should be paying them. It was a blatant way to keep from promoting deserving people to detective, IMO. Unfortunately, some retirees took them up on it.
I didn't need full pay, but I think my experience and expertise is worth something.
