Fellow LE officers, pubic... I think it's time we need to bring a little truth in what really takes place on the street. I want to share my personal opinion relating to our "dirty work". I want to start off giving a heads up to the rookies out there. I hope that you listen and try to understand, while you're still new the force, what must exactly happen, in order to get the arrest made.
Now, rookies, if you have not experienced this and have "honor" to yourself and the department for the rest of your time in uniform, my hat's off to ya. Please keep that attitude for the rest of your career. There WILL come a time when yo have to make that decision.
Whether the long shifts affect your demeanor, family problems, or the simple fact that you put your life on the line everyday for the public and do not get the pay or the respect you should deserve. Or maybe all fo the above may at one time have an impact on your ability to see yourself doing right 100% of the time. Trust me, that day will come.
Everyone suspects it- the corruption that takes place in the force. The sad thing, it's mostly true, but most of the time, it is never revealed. Corruption could be as serious as tampering with a murder case to get the guy nailed for something WE knew he did, but cannot prove it. Or it can be as simple as lying about a radar detector's accuracy.
It happens folks, and the question is, do we need that amount of "corruption" to make the system happen. It's all about money. The court system, the politics, the pay for the Chief, Mayor, counsel and everyone else involved.
In some cases, i say we do need it. First and foremost, public safety. We have a murderer on the loose and we're going to lie under oath to get him put away.
In other cases,... " I don't like the way that guy looked at me"... " so I will throw a little something inside his vehicle and get him on posession."
So, where is the balance? I don't believe i can answer that question. Truthfully, this should be black and white. But it will never be that way.
We walk around with a badge thinking we can do whatever we want and actually believe we are a step above the guy packaging groceries in the store. And if he challenges me, I will find a way to get him on some charge one way or the other.
On our defense, the public wants us around whenever you need us. Any other time, we're just wasting the taxpayer's money everytime we stop for a coffee.
But when bad guy pulls up in your yard and whips out a gun, you call on us.... And you turn a blind eye whenever we corruptfully do something to get him put away. But any other time, we're the center of attention for some other corruption charge brought on by your neighbor.
So, what is your opinion on all of this? I am looking forward to everyone having HEALTHY debate here.
