    LEO hiring percent?

I read an article about the Orlando, FL police departments hiring numbers and budget. It said that out of approximately 1000 applications received, only 30 or so would be hired.

So I starting wondering... how many applicants out of that 1000 are actually "qualified"?

Meaning how many would pass a backround check, POLY, credit check, fitness test, medical, oral, etc etc etc.

Like I'm sure 10-20% of the applications are shredded right away because the applicant has 2 DUIs or a felony or some sort of automatic DQ. Then another 20% or so are thrown out because they don't meet the minimum requirements I.E. not enough college, no HS diploma, no military, not a U.S. citizen, or whatever.

So basically I was wondering if anyone on here had experience in hiring new LEO's and what percent are "hireable" but not "competitive."

When I worked as a grocery store manager before the Navy I used to assist in the hiring process a bit and we would throw out about half of the applications because they either failed the drug test or answered a question poorly on the honestly exam... "I think it is OK to steal items worth less than $5 from my employer because these items are cheap anyway and the company can afford it."

Just curious if anyone had some rough numbers or guesses Thanks

    MA3 (hopefully MA2 soon...)

That's probably about what we hire. Most are washed out first by the written and then by the oral. And as stated, some are tossed immediately after reading the application. But we only do the rest of the testing and background on approximately the same number of openings we have. It's not so much that many people flunk, it's that we only have so many openings per year.

The written and oral tests are relatively cheap to give, the rest are expensive and only give to those who we might hire.

Our last testing process washed out 75% after the physical fitness and written exam. Crazy, isn't it? It's really unfortunate.

In the NYPD, most fail out on psych oral interview...the next largest group is due to medical issues and the last groups of any significance is the PT test. Few get nailed on the background in the NYPD.

The only reason we required a bachelor's degree for a while was to limit the number of applicants. We were having 1500 show up for the written test, but most were probably taken out at the oral board. I sat on several of them and can attest that a lot of applicants were flunked by us just because of their attitude. I was always amazed at the number of people who came in wearing jeans and t-shirts and then expecting us to take them seriously.

But the boards I sat flunked at least half of the ones we saw. I suspect that like NYPD, a lot were also taken out by the psych exam. Which is kind of iffy, IMO. More than weeding out crazies, it limits the applicants to what the psychologist "thinks" will make a good police officer. When I was an FTO, I could tell when we changed shrinks by the applicants we had coming on. It was that obvious.

We are also very, very picky when it comes to orthopedic and heart issues. We lose a lot of people every year to back, knee and heart problems. All of those have to be perfect to be hired.
