    General Policy on Affairs

I am involved with a reserve police officer who is unmarried. I am married but have been separated for nine months. We have been together for ten months.

Can someone tell me what general policies are in place for an unmarried police officer being involved with someone married?

Could the police officer be fired? Reprimanded?

Until something about the affair materially interferes with the performance of the officer's duty, most departments could care less. Occasionally, a rare Chief will claim it is conduct unbecoming that reflects unfavorably on the department and try to take disciplinary action, but unless it involves knock down drag out fights between lovers in the street, such cases are usually overturned in court.

    leo1966-

We have a strict policy on this site about registering a username that implies that one is a Law Enforcement Officer if they are not.

Since, by your post, you do not seem to be a Law Enforcement Officer, I banned that username. I encourage you to stay on the site, but need to ask you to register another username.

    Thank you for your understanding.

In reference to your question, even if he were cheating on his spouse, as long as it does not effect anything relating to his job and nothing inappropriate happens on duty, most departments in my experience will not care.

    Or first name....

My dept doesn't interfere in our private lives as long as we do nothing that publicly reflects on it or causes problems at work.

Sure, maybe. It could be a name, initials, or something else completely unrealted.

The username "bob_the_trooper" could be a guy named Bob who is known for sticking it out and being a "trooper" all the time. Or maybe he's a fan of the Empire from Star Wars. "Copper719" could be a metallurgist who was born on July 19th.

Doing it this way ensures that there is no possibility of confusion.

With most of the cops I know having an affair is the standard.

It's no more rampant than in any other occupation. Well, except for Catholic priests...

The sheriff's office here has a general order about infidelity among married deputies being prohibited, although it's relatively new and I haven't heard of anyone being disciplined for it yet. Usually an officer isn't going to get in trouble for having an affair, however it's the things that happen once the spouse finds out about the affair that end up causing the problems.

FYI - "leo" WAS my astrological sign. Not sure how that implied anything Law Enforcement related.

Thank you everyone for your input.

Just to further explain my situation... He (the officer) is NOT married - and has not been married for 7+ years. I am the one married and not affiliated with a police department or government agency in any way.

I appreciate all the feed back. I have been summoned by his commanding officer for a private meeting and unsure what he may have to say to me. I wanted to know how other agencies may handle this situation so I know what to expect at this meeting.

    Thanks!

it sounds like the chief may be getting some flack from somewhere; or he/she may just be taking precautionary action...

Thats strange that the CO wants a meeting, unless someone is making an issue of it.

Also LEO is sometimes short for "law enforcement officer".

I would tell his CO to kiss my ***. If you don't work for the police department and you're not committing a crime, what you do is none of his business. Nothing good will come out of that meeting, I can tell you that. Let your "friend" deal with his CO and you stay out of it.
