Just before I got out of the Army, I was the XO of a company. Some single 19 year old Spec5 got involved with a single woman about 27 years old. Dumb **** wrote his cousin and bragged about it and the cousin told his aunt who was a real Bible thumper. The aunt wrote the CO and complained about how the Army was destroying the morals of America's young men.

He showed me the letter and apparently my reaction of "You gotta be ****ting me" wasn't what he wanted. He had planned on me lecturing this kid, I guess, but after that he decided to do it with me present. I had to stare out the window to keep from rolling my eyes while he chewed this poor kid out.

Tricky thing with it being on the books and not prosecuted. There's a Utah case of LEO being fired and court upholding it. Breaking the law, prosecuted or not, LEO's can be held accountable with their jobs is what the court said. The key was that adultery statutes have already been held constitutional by Supreme Court.

Other than that Utah case, though, I've never heard of it happening. The married Utah guy was doing the 18 year old explorer and it was a PR nightmare. I'll see if I can find it.

Most any dept. would only use that IF they were looking for an excuse to can someone. Hell, I could have pointed the finger at and produced witnesses to over half the command where I worked doing it at one time or the other.

My old department had a policy against it. I know of more than a few who have been disciplined because of it, one lost his Sgt stripes over it, but it was his second offense.

Not that I condone it, but I'm grateful that where I worked, for the most part our private lives were our business and Oregon doesn't have religion based laws like that. To me, that law is the Christian version of forcing women to cover their entire bodies in public.
