I can't speak from my personal experience, but several of my friends with a couple of different S.O.'s worked river patrol and they loved it. The advantages would be obvious and I don't recall them ever making negative comments about the job.
In fact, there was always a continuing waiting list of people wanting to get on it.

Speaking of water critters, bumped into a cotton mouth water moccasin today on an off duty gig. Good 4ft long or so.

A good way to go into this field is join the Coast Guard, or as a second option the Navy. These are the largest agencies that operate and enforce laws on the water. If your looking for something closer to home San Diego Harbor Police are always hiring. Customs and Boarder Patrol also deal with alot of traffic on the water due to the big cargo ships.
