A new law went into effect Jan 1st here in Ga called the "Super Speeder Law".
What that means is if you are caught going 15 over the speed limit, the State is going to fine you another 200 bucks. Now this is not a criminal fine, it is a civil one. If you don't pay it the state will suspend your drivers lisence.
Gov. Perdue says that this fine is going to go directly to fund trauma centers. This is a lie. If the money is going to fund trauma centers, why is it going into the general state fund? A fund that the state can dip into any time.
This law does nothing more than turn our hard working police officers into revenue agents for the state. How would that make you feel?

In PA we have a surcharge on every ticket (except parking and motorcycles) that is now called the MCARE. It was formally referred to as the CAT fund, CAT being short for the Catastrophic loss fund. It ranges from $30.00 and up and no one can ever seem to tell me where it goes and what exactly it is being used for.

IMO, unless there is some directive ordering officers to write higher speeds on tickets or to ticket more (e.g. taking away their discretion), I don't see officers being turned into revenue agents. I.e. if the average amount of tickets per month written for speeding over 15+ stays about the same, then IMO there is no issue - it just happens that the fines are higher and the money is going someplace else.

If someone is going 15 over the speed limit, they get a ticket. (And I didn't write many tickets) What happens after that is none of my business. Best idea: Don't drive 15 over and that law will cause you zero problems....
