im 23 and i skateboard at this park next to a highschool..in the bay area.. and theres kids of all ages who skate there.. anyways theres this group of black guys who are jacking kids for ipods and there all too afraid to do anything about it.. i was trying to come up with a plan to help them out.. i figured if enough of them turn him in he could rack up some strikes and go to jail?..

they just dont want any backlash for turning him in by his buddies or him.. any help on this situation?

I'm praying that "bay area" + "skateboarding" = California. Believe it or not, there's more than one bay in the U.S.

Contact the police and let them know this is going on. They'll tell you what to do. Strong armed robbery capers suck and almost have to be caught in the act to make a really strong case.

You CAN do the video camera thing, but be cautious that you don't make yourself a target or turn yourself into an instigator because you want to post it on YouTube. Also, if you film a robbery in progress, don't be a moron and just stand there and film. Make sure you or someone else calls the police and tell them it's being videotaped.

Don't expect any kind of reward besides a possible "Thank you." Your reward is helping out the kids who are constantly getting jacked.

i was thinking of getting in contact with the cops and getting a number i can text messege when i see things like this about to happen.maybe one of the cops personal phones ... using a phone around this situation is tough because youll be labeled as a snitch or soemthing and i might be targeted.. but txting is quick a couple buttons and ur done.. thoughts on the idea?.. i just dont want to waste the cops time with false alarms.. because you never really know if the toughguys will act or not

this was also recently posted.. the police presence is a joke. yesterday i saw 1 bike cop patrol for 5 minutes... about 30 minutes later these kids attempted to rob one and one of us big guys stepped in and stopped it.. luckily one of us is a boxer and thinks he can handle whatever comes... then the very next day which is today the same kid stole another kids ipod while he was alone at the park

Yeah, that's never going to happen.

Maybe 911 is accepting texts in Berkley, they are not in St. Louis. And no cop in the world is going to give you their cell phone number so you can send them a coded message to tell them someone is being suspicious in the park.

There is a reason we have dispatchers. We need certain information from a person reporting a crime or suspicious activity and texting does not lend itself to easily covering the number of things that need to be asked. The phone or in person at a police station is the only way to get that done.

Let's say that you do get a cop's number to text....

24 hours a day * 7 days a week = 168 hours in a week.
My schedule = 40 hours in a week (give or take).
40 / 168 = Me at work just under 24% of the time.

That means even if I *do* give you my cell number, there is a 76% chance (give or take) that you get a text back from me saying "At home watching American Idol" (or something).

So, to re-tell you what you have already been told, the right thing to do is CALL THE POLICE when you see something going on. You aren't working undercover for us, you are just keeping your eyes open and reporting suspicious activity when you see it. If you have the means to SAFELY record a crime in progress and you want to do that, you may well help us in the end.

On a largely unrelated note... I don't know anything about skateboarders in Berkley, but I know plenty of guys I used to skate with back in the 1990s
who were borderline involved with some (non-racist) skinhead groups like SHARP. These guys were really good guys, but would get in fights at the drop of a hat. They would have found those guys to try and jack and they would have gotten a skateboard to the side of the head for his trouble, and somebody would have gone to the hospital. After that, those guys would find a new hobby (or new targets...)
