    How about something like this?

AIM UTG Deluxe Drop Leg Triple Rifle Magazine Pouch UTG Deluxe Drop Leg Triple Rifle Magazine Pouch

I've got a drop leg triple pouch (usually stored in the trunk) for extra pistol magazines. If I were allowed to carry a personal AR15, I'd get one for AR15 magazines too. Many of the drop leg pouches are clip on/off. I keep a loop with the female part of the buckle attached to my sam browne, opposite side from primary firearm. Normally, I clip an X26 (in a drop leg holster) there - if need be, I'll remove the Taser and clip on the triple magazine pouch, or gas mask, etc...

My partner has a drop leg mag pouch. She had a buckle that hangs down from her duty belt and when she needs the mags the pouch snaps into the buckle and then straps around the thigh. (**EDIT- I just noticed Samuels Post above, hers is very much like that setup but from a different company**)

I use an over-the-shoulder bag (actually the EOD bag from countycomm) for my SHTF rifle bag. It's got my mags, some first aid gear, and some snacks (for those extended perimeters) as well as a couple bottles of water. I also have a tactical vest but I rarely use it to hold my rifle mags, it's generally just more of a plain-clothes ID thing.

I never thought of actually using one of the maxpedition bags to hold my rifle gear but they do have a lot of fans so I'm sure they would work great.

Mine served me well on 2 tours overseas and several quick jump-outs here on stateside. It is especially nice when working an operation that is a little more discreet goes sideways (like wearing a slick vest and minimal equipment on a rolling surveillance and then it goes right into a vehicle assault).

Something I'm looking at using when I get certified for a rifle:

Center Mass, Inc., committed to rifle-craft snice 1996.

As others have mentioned MOLLE set ups like this are great:

    Eagle LE Plate Carrier Molle

Throw a couple mags and a blow out kit on front and small plates for extra protection and your good to go. With the adjustable design you'll be able to snug it up high enough to maintain access to your belt also.
