Small town police chief wants to make more than NYC police Comm.

    This from the Gothamist:

The Westhampton Beach Police Chief is looking for a raise—and Newsday says that if he gets one, he "would make more than New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who oversees the largest police department in the country." Kelly earn $189,700; Westhampton Beach Police Chief Raymond Dean makes $149,624/year for his base, and he also gets extra pay which makes his total pay "$188,709.60. He is also entitled to compensatory time - days for extra work." Dean explained, "The guy who cleans my cesspool makes more money than me." Newsday points out there were only 43 serious crimes in Westhampton Beach, whereas there were 116,824 in NYC. Westhampton Village Mayor—and former Southampton police chief—Conrad Teller said, "Commissioner Kelly made the mistake of staying in New York. He made his choice." Well, maybe Dean wants to move to Clarkstown, NY—over there, the chief made $332,529.88, one captain made "$335,676 while working two days a week because of a disability and spending three days a week undergoing physical therapy" and the other captain made over $311,000according to this NY Times article about high police pay.

I'd like to be the guy who cleans his cesspool. The chief complains that guy makes more money than he does and doesn't have near the responsibility. I tried to find out what the police officer rank made, but the wages weren't posted anywhere on the site.

It did list the name of every officer that works there. Also interesting is that there a no women listed as working there, however they do have one female dispatcher....

I do recall that Suffolk county police made a whole lot of money too. Several years ago, I think it was close to 6 figures.

Both Nassau and Suffolk county Officers make an average of around 130K, including overtime and the like, which is where most of it comes from after the 100K+ base.

Jeez, I thought I was living high when I took this county job and started making $200 more a month and was no longer paying for any benefits (thanks Sheriff). I see now, I am in the wrong state.

What's ironic to me is (my pension is public record), I make a touch over $65K a year being retired. When I started, I made even less than Greg, $3.65 an hour. That was with no vest, no portable radio, no taser or pepper spray. We had a gun, a Kel-Lite and a tube type radio in the car that took about 15 seconds to warm up when you turned it on.

And contrary to what some of the young people may believe, it was just as dangerous on the street in 1970 as it was in 1998 when I retired and (I highly suspect) as it is now. That's why I respect and appreciate all the people still working and am glad I don't do it anymore....

I made $5.75 an hour when I started in '78.

And yes, police work is just as dangerous now as it was when Wyatt or Virgl Earp were taking somone in during the 1800's. Human behavior has not changed...you just never know when you are going to run across someone who will kill.
