    Putting gear together...belt...bag...many quesitions

Learning about the cool new stuff I get to blow cash on. Luckily our dept issues pretty much everything (except boots).

We do all nylon web gear and I'm curious which order you guys set yours up and why? *(I have searched and read and am asking again because... -->) I am very curious about DIY mods to make it ride better, ie my buddy custom fixed his tazer cartridge holder onto his extra mag pouch. What else do you experienced guys know of?

    ALSO:

    Mag pouch vertical or horizontal?

    Where to put keepers?

What style of handcuff key and where do you keep it?

Extra knives, flashlights, AR mags, keyrings/key socks, or phone holder?

Any better way to belt carry an iPhone than the Otterbox Defender?

How do you carry your BUG?

What do you keep in your patrol bag if you use a pool car?

Thanks for any input, I'm trying to get some ideas now so I can shop and have some idea what I'm going to do after the academy.

    Thank you!

I doubt you will get much posting of tactics (such as BUG location and such) on an open internet forum. But I will congratulate you on your getting hired and I wish you a long and successful career!

Your training cadre and FTO's should cover that. There are some departments that actually have policies in place as to WHERE on your belt certain things should be.
Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

    "Wrong door, buddy!"

Let no man's ghost say my training failed him.

Yep. I know very well how excited you are. I will never forget that feeling.

But, take it from an old timer...stay low profile, keep your eyes and ears open and mouth shut.

Set short term goals; 1) Make it through the academy. 2) Make it through FTO. 3) Make it off probation.

Then, go out there, develop your skills and kick some.
This career is not a sprint, it is a marathon.

Yup....do as your FTO says to do in FTO. While in the academy, do as your tactical instructors say to do....sometimes things differ from the academy to FTO. Learn. That's what you are being paid to do, so do it well! And we'll be waiting for ya in the verified LEO section!

As you probably saw when you researched a few existing threads on gear/belt set up, it varies from LEO to LEO. Depends on things like department policy, handed-ness, how much room you have, what you want/need to carry, personal preference, etc...

I am very curious about DIY mods to make it ride better, ie my buddy custom fixed his tazer cartridge holder onto his extra mag pouch. What else do you experienced guys know of?

Personally, I wouldn't get all crazy and do anything that might draw any possible negative attention to yourself - walking into/around the academy with jury-rigged equipment is not something I'd recommend.

    ALSO:

    Mag pouch vertical or horizontal?

Depends on how much room, how you like to access, how they teach/want you to access, etc.

    Where to put keepers?

Of all my gear, I want my gun to move around the least. I am, however, also OCD and have to have my keepers symmetrical. You also have to consider how many and where the openings are between your equipment and belt loops - you may not have many places to choose from.

What style of handcuff key and where do you keep it?

One round body clip on, in right breast pocket, one basic on car key ring, one hidden. Up to you.

Extra knives, flashlights, AR mags, keyrings/key socks, or phone holder?

Depends on policy(ies), available space, etc.

Any better way to belt carry an iPhone than the Otterbox Defender?

Personally, if I had an iPhone (which I don't), I'd probably keep it in a shirt pocket (after being signed off training). Otherwise, glove compartment, center console, small gear bag with other stuff, etc...

How do you carry your BUG?

Two Desert Eagles, holsters on both ankles.

What do you keep in your patrol bag if you use a pool car?

All the stuff I will or might need that I can't or don't carry on my person.

Thanks for any input, I'm trying to get some ideas now so I can shop and have some idea what I'm going to do after the academy.

    Thank you!

And don't be the guy who always asks question just as the class is ending, especially just before lunch! I still hate that guy and that was nearly 40 years ago!

Will do. I'm curious if starting a weekly update on our academy class would be boring for y'all? I know the DPS guys do one, but the academy is a little more intense as it is 6 mos and live in.

    Lemme know. We start Monday.

GigAg04 Personally since your going to be doing the academy only 2 months ahead of me I would like to see you do a weekly update one as well. I know I will
