Just found out a guy I got a few weeks ago with 12 kilos of coke got a whole 365 days! I do love the State of California and their plea deals  The guy didn't even cooperate.
Anyone else ever wonder WTH the DA/AUSA's are thinking?

Well, as a crime fighting pizza deliverer... :D
Take some advice from an old cop.... Quit worrying about things that you have no control over. Do the best job you can and then let go of what other people do with the case you brought them.

I guess the point of a DA section would be so that we, as cops (oops, I'm unverified...I mean as pizza delivery doods) can get a better case to their desks, and they in turn can get a better sentence. But that wouldn't be practical, as each area has its own requirements, etc. I am a big fan of meeting with the DDA after a case to find out how I could have improved my end of the case. The problem with that is the DDAs are so backed up with cases they NEVER have the time to meet with me after the case. I mean, after I deliver the pizza....gah.
Me too. But the purpose was to see if I could have done it differently. In fact, I've gone into judges' chambers after a ruling they made to see if it was because of something I did or ask how I could have handled it better. They rarely liked it, but they knew I was paying attention.
As far as the DA's time, I never made an appointment, I walked into their offices and started talking to them. Since they want to win cases, they were almost always willing to discuss it with me.
As far as plea agreements, I couldn't care less. I never saw it fruitful to rag on some DDA, at least in my jurisdiction, that plea was approved by several people above him. I took my job satisfaction from what I did with the case, not what someone else does with it.

HA!!
I was thinking there should be a place on the Forum to ask a DumbA$$ Question, myself... :D
It would save some bandwidth on the AAC thread for actual important stuff, like "Can I use the "Hat Defense" if the Cop was wearing a wig?"

Maybe he plead out in the prelim?
I can't speak for any other jurisdiction, but it would be hard for that to happen that quickly here unless the DA REALLY wanted to get rid of the case because of problems with it, like the search.
Even in that case, the defense attorney would have talked to suspect into taking it because of the chance of a really long sentence if the search did end up flying. But it sounds like both attorneys were quite concerned about winning.
As FJDave and I both discussed, I'd sit down and have a chat with the DA or AUSA and ask why. Never know what you might find out.
