I was nearly a local news story this morning.
Waffle House, Peach Orchard RD, Augusta, GA
I had left a late night gaming session (role playing at the book store) and decided to go to the WH near my house on the way home. When I left the book store I was OCing. It was around 2 am. Yes the club/bar scene was also releasing shortly; but I do not do that kind of thing.
I have been to this waffle house a dozen times before as it is the one near my house, and the workers there are pretty darn cool and fun to chat with. I ordered and was eating when this all happened.
Two groups walk in, both from the clubs. I actually know one group from high school but are not friends with them.
The group I know (group A) asks the man and woman of group B to move their vehicle because they were blocking them from a parking space. For a reason unknown to me, Group B starts to raise hell. In this case the man from Group B is the aggressor as Group A was trying to get away from him. Some shouts later, Group B follows one guy from group A out to the parking lot right in front of the store.
Group B's car is parallel and directly next to the front windows of the WH.
From my training and experience I know by the tumultuous manner in which Group B is following A out; something bad was about to happen.
I do follow them all out and stand to the right side of the building, behind cover but less than 15 feet from Group B's car. I have said or done nothing else this entire time. Again not a single one of them is aware of my OC'd firearm.
I do not think Group B even saw me standing less than 15 feet from him the entire time.
More shouts, the man from Group B is digging around beneath his SUV's seat. He came up with a black GI type .45 and continues shouting. Both of his arms were lowered to his side. At the same time I am looking at the man root around his car, I move behind the stores brick wall as cover and had an open line of sight to this man, he was out in the open to me even though he had his door open, as the door was on the opposite side of the man from me.
I am already decided in that split second if he raises his arm I am going to draw and put rounds into his body. Luckily for him, he does not; a couple of seconds go by and he gets back in his SUV and starts to leave. A few more shouts thrown back and forth and he finally leaves. I go back inside and finish my meal.
That is the closest I have ever been from actually shooting someone; working as a deputy or not. It took me about 35 minutes to come down from the adrenaline dump.
The police were called during the altercation but the WH lady that called it in did not see the man's pistol and only one car came after it was over. He was in the parking lot and then left. Obviously, had they been told a weapon was involved a minimum of two cars would have been dispatched and likely more shown up in emergency mode.
