    Anyone familiar with Taurus guns?

I bought a new Taurus ultra lite, snub nose, 38 special made by Taurus international in Brazil.
I started to buy a S&W which cost twice as much but since I don't have that kind of money to blow I went with the Taurus. It seems like a pretty good little hand gun. Other than a little heavier trigger pull than the S&W both revolvers are pretty much the same.
After putting about 60 rounds through it I'm hoping the trigger pull will lighten up.

Not as familiar as I'd like to be. If I can get another gig, I'll remedy that, though. ;)

Taurus makes good revolvers but their autoloaders are teh suck. Their customer service is the worst in the industry.

I have a Taurus 945 Millennium .45 semi that I like fine. Never had a problem with it.

I still own the Taurus 850 'Total Titanium' model (850SHC).

Great belly gun. It is now my only double action revolver. Well hold on, Norm can you call that model double action? Its hammer is completely shrouded and can not be 'cocked' manually.

    Trot line weight

In the late 60's, the Taurus was considered good for using on a trot line. Trigger mech's were generally cast instead of machined, and broke all the time. We had one deputy shot when his Taurus .357 didn't fire because the hammer pin broke. Course, that was 40 yrs ago...maybe they've improved?

Could be. But so far, I like it. It's fairly simply built and I've seen nothing in the mechanisms that look like future problems. But I'm no gunsmith either.

I like carrying a .45 and was going to get a mini Glock until my dept had a couple go kaboom. A friend of mine who is a gunsmith recommended this particular model.

But I don't do a lot of shooting either. It usually only consists of my annual qualification for HR218.

I bought a Taurus Model 85 back in the early 80's and carried it on my leg for years. It is a good little revolver.

I can't vouch for them for the last 20 years, though. They've pretty much copied a lot of what S&W made, so I'm not sure they are any good anymore...

    Did I mention that I think S&W's are a POS?:p

I used the 92F knock-off that Taurus put out. I was working a security contract in the Caribbean a few moons ago and the Brazilian cont. of the Useless Nations..oops, United Nations gave the government I was working for about 200 of them. I was familiar with the operation from my US Army days but tried it head to head against a Glock 19, H&K USP .45, and a Glock 18 (don't see many of these around, gave the one I acquired to a Dominican Secret Service Agent as it was a no-no to bring it back to the States). I will say the accuracy was pretty good on the range, standard shooting. But it failed in a big way when it came to continuous shooting, rapid reload, and other combat scenarios. It seems that the failure was usually in the build up of debris (carbon if you will). I have never had any associated problems with the Glock family, H&K, or Sig for that matter. Big positives were the simplicity of training some "difficult" students, and trust me, they all came to the range in a short bus, helmets, wet seat backs, lip prints on the window....It is a fairly large frame, big (and few) parts, trigger mechanism is hard to take apart (so the egg-heads can't say "Hmmm, what does this pin do?"), easy to clean..etc. I would not recommend THIS model from my experience, I have heard great things about their revolvers though.

    Cheers!

I would have no doubt chosen something else if I were still an actual working cop. But I don't worry about fast reload, combat situations, etc.

Now I'm just an old man who uses the gun to keep the kids and dogs off his lawn!:D

Wow, you sound like my grand pa! (Not an age stab, BTW), he used to use this little .22 LR to shoot at bumble-bee's in the back yard; he actually did hit them, he was usually drinking out of a mason jar, and the kids and the dogs stayed away from the back yard! God I do miss that man!

Heh, my granddad used a slingshot. He kept it and a coffee can full of small rocks by his chair on the front porch. He was deadly accurate with that thing! Dogs walking down the street would actually cross the street before they came to his house and then cross back when they got past it.....

He was 6'6" back when few men reached 6 foot. He feared no one except my 5'2" grandmother! She ruled the house with an iron fist!:D Like you, I cherish the memories of them!

I've also got a model 85 (Similar to the S&W Chief Special) that I have had for several years. There really wasn't anything wrong with it out of the box BUT... I had a good friend of mine who was a skilled gunsmith perform some work on the action, smoothed the trigger from its factory grooved trigger and rounded the hammer spur for me (Reduces potential snagging to clothing while drawing). It has a very sweet action on it now. I do not shoot it very often and I do not carry it with me on duty. I generally have it handy here in the house if needed.

I am not the authority of guns by any means but I can generally echo what's already been said. Taurus has come a long way and I think they generally make a decent gun BUT... I have not purchased any other Taurus weapons in several years though. Not since getting my model 85.
