    Duty Boot Question

I am trying to decide between the Magnum Stealth II or the Thorogood Commando Deuce as a summer duty boot. I have worn the Magnum's before but not Thorogood. anyone have any thoughts on them? I'm trying to get an idea of just how "lightweight" the Thorogoods are in comparison. Thanks.

I wore shoes. Never did see the need to wear boots unless I was hiking or working in mud or snow. I know that's not as macho, but I could run better and it was more comfortable.

Now that were allowed, I wear boots all the time. I guess some of it depends on the type of work you are doing. As a road beater in a rural area, I have twisted my ankel just from a edge rut on the roadway. That's not to meation how many times you find yourself going after someone in the woods. I was always having ankle problems wearing those shiny bates shoes. Not that they weren't comfortable, they just were not suited to my work area.
Excuse me Officer, I have a stupid Question. "No problem, I've got a stupid answer for you!"

we are actually required by contract to wear boots. The last pair we were issued were the Magnum Stealth II that had the side zip, which I really didn't care for; I have heard of a lot of issues with the zipper. I am trying to decide between the Stealth II without the zipper or the Thorogood's. I don't know anyone that wears them, so I am hoping somewhere here has and can give some feedback on them.

Probably in rural areas they came in handy, but in an urban sitting, I found them useless. The districts I worked in uniform were high crime and I was liable to be in a foot chase fairly frequently. Boots were just cumbersome. In fact, during the summer, I had some Addidas referee shoes that were black. They were great for the police work I did. More than I few times, I had to go over a backyard fence and with the shoes, I could sometimes hurdle them. With heavy boots, I'm not sure I could have.

In the winter, I wore some Red Goose hightop shoes that came up to the ankle. They were handy for all the rain we had, but they were pretty light weight too. The only time I wore boots was when it was icy. My old army boots with the rubber soles were the best I ever had for walking on ice. But I wasn't too worried about bad guys being out and about on those nights either.....

I've heard Thorogood makes good boots, I think it's what my little bro wears in the navy.
Even though I don't work in law enforcement I do wear "combat style" boots.
I like Danner Striker 45s. Mesh sides so they breathe, Gore-Tex, light, comfortable and I can run in them easily.
I always preferred boots/quarter boots for extra ankle support. But like others said, I live in a rural area, so I will be partial to certain things that others wouldn't.

But like everyone else I think it depends on where you are working. I have boots that I use when I know I'll be working checkpoint and I have other boots I wear when I know I'll be in the brush. All depends on what you're doing.

I haven't tried the Magnums, have the Thorogoods- my personal opinion, I liked the Rocky featherweights the best. Those boots were actually lighter than my New Balance cross trainers.

I'm a big fan of danner boots. They are expensive and the first week you will hate them. But once they are broke in, they are like a fine woman that makes you tingle all over.

I love my Stealth Boots with the zipper side. It is very comfortable. I dont wear it everyday, but I have taken it on a muddy trek while hiking.

I have never tried a Throroughgood.

BP348, what do you use for your brush boots? The only bad thing about me changing agencies is my new one does not pay for boots. I need something that will work for inspections in LMPT and still handle the desert of western Colorado. I've got Wolverine DuraShocks EH in steeltoe right now. These things are ok but I'd like something lighter w/o the steel toe.

I'll second the Danners. Expensive, but WELL worth it!

Like Ispbear & RT302 I use Danners. I don't know if they're lighter then your durashocks but they last a long time and come in insulated & uninsulated. As stated they're a little expensive but worth it.

I also know several guys I work with have Rocky boots and they all seem to like them. Most of them have the 8" AlphaForce Boot. When I buy another pair of boots that's what I'm going to buy.

Thanks for the replies. The boot store we usually go through here doesn't carry Danners so I'll have to keep looking around town. They did have Rockys so I'll go back and look again. Otherwise, they had Original SWATAir 9" and Magnum Viper 6" that looked like they may work out. These Wolverines are 6" and are lighter than the Redwings I used to wear, but I've got to get out of these steel toes.

I've heard some good things about the, Original SWAT boots. But I don't know if they're brush boots.

Yes you need to get out of the steel-toe boots ;)
