    Visited a prison today...

So, today my criminal justice class visited the Pacific Missouri, medium security prison. Little did I know that we would be walking around in the yard brushing shoulders with the inmates. They did give is these alarm devices in case something were to happen. On the tour we saw the manufacturing center where inmates made couches, desks, flag poles, etc. Then went to the education center, cafeteria (smelled horrible), chapel, music room, gym, weight room and then to some of the inmates cells (I didn't know they had cable tv!).

Overall I enjoyed it. I did get a kick out of the prisoners hollering at the girls on our tour :p. Hopefully in a few years I will be putting criminals in there. :D

When I was in high school our campus cop taught a class as part of some grant requirement that paid for the position in the school. Anyway we had a Pinal County Deputy for two years and she took use to a CCA (contract) prison were the Alaskan (I think) prisoners put on a program called “Concerned Offender for Youth Awareness (C.O.Y.A.)”

When we went in they locked the place down expect for the 10 or so inmates who did the COYA program. We got to visit the yard, SEG, eat with them (the food really wasn’t that bad no different then school food;)). Just before we ate they all told use their story of how they got in prison and what they could/should have done differently.
All in all I really like the program.

And just for the record, no, it was not “Scared Straight” program.

Surprisingly, no, it was not me.

Though on my first day there, I did beat a kid with an aluminum lunch tray for stealing my ice cream sandwich.

In my defense, I was having a bad day. I was in YDC because my Dad got locked up and Clayton County had no emergency shelter for "homeless" kids, not because I commited a crime.

Considering what goes on in prisons, I wouldn't be too sure it was the girls they were hollering at. :D

 I can't believe how stupid some states can be. Nothing like putting a kid like that in with a bunch of thugs.....

But then again, I'd never get between Norm and an ice cream sandwich..... Probably why he packs all the time now!

I can't imagine any state doing that. In my county you used to sleep in the dispatch center of whatever department was involved. If you didn't have 24 hour dispatch I don't know what they did...
