Do you recommend being a police officer?

Just a question for both the police officer's on here and those who want to be police officers.

Do you police officer's recommend careers in law enforcement to your friends and families? For those of you who want to be police officers do people you know recommend it to you?

My mom and dad, a police officer, both want me to be a firefighter and other officers I know have recommended being a firefighter to me as well. While they're not against me being a police officer they definately want me to be a firefighter over a police officer.

Do you officer's recommend police work to people, and for those of you who want to be police officers do people ever recommend it to you?

This job is terrible. Let's just make that blunt. Very few people like you much less respect you. You see horrible things nearly every single day... dead bodies abused children/spouses, people so far gone on drugs/mental illness there's nothing you can do.

On the other side, sometimes you help people.

I hate and love this job with a passion every day. I love my job, I love knowing I sometimes help those who need it and sometimes hurt those who deserve it. I hate not being able to help people who need it and not being able to hurt those who deserve it.

It takes a special person to do this job in this day and age, sometimes I question if I am that person. But, I still do it, I still love it.

Reccommend it? Only to those I believe would take it as seriously as I do and those I know realize it affects your whole life.

You can't be a cop and be normal at the same time.

    I'll put it this way:

If I had it to do over again, given the present conditions, PC crap, state of Affairs and Court leniency, I'd not.:(

I'd more likely be a Combat Photographer or something similar... at least that's the way I've been feeling lately.

I don't recommend becoming a police officer as a general piece of advice to everyone. If you don't really want to be a PO, it isn't for you. It can be a great career, but it isn't a normal job to which you simply go to pay the bills. If you really want it, go for it. However, don't become a PO if you aren't excited about it. Personally, I want to be in law enforcement and could never be a firefighter. You need to figure out which job you would be excited about doing.

You should only do my job because you want to. This is not a job to get into for your family, your friends or because COPS is your Fav TV show.

I'm kind of suprised how it seems must cops feels. I was talking to one of my dad's friends once and he said while he enjoyed the job he doesn't want his son to do it. My dad has said he wishes he stayed in the Marines and made it a career, instead of becoming a cop.

I personally have just always wanted to be a cop over making a career in the military or being a firefighter.

I'm in the LE field near to 30 years now. I can recommend it to people who really are interested in in. Not to anyone who is "just looking for something interesting". For myself, I was four years old when I wanted to become a cop and I have my dream job, with all the very bad things we see and feel daily. And, for your question, NO, I don't recommend LE jobs for my son or daughter, they are not the "types" for this job. My daughter should do something social and my son anything with animals.

There are two things I'm good in, the second is arresting people

I'm looking for Drug/Narcotic Unit patches together with DUI/DWI unit patches for a frame in our Anti-Drug-Team bureau

Also looking for Massachusetts Police and US Capitol City PD patches now!
