Why does law enforcement hate pot so much?

First off let me say thank you to the men and women of law enforcement who keep our streets safe by putting their lives on the line ever day. I am pretty pro-LE and my best buddy is a cop.

Now let me say I am a casual Marijuana smoker. That is the only law I knowingly break and I am willing to face the consequences of my actions. Other than that I am a stand up guy, I am young, married, have a good job and have a CCW (I only smoke at home so being in possession of pot and my carry piece is a none issue). I would gladly help a cop out in a physical altercation if I thought he needed help.

I am by no means they typical stereotypical pot head. I smoke rarely and very few people in my life know I do, I am not at all ashamed of it but it is still illegal and technically I am a criminal. I also am starting to get active on the legislation front and I keep running into the same thing.

All over the country law enforcement agencies from federal down almost always oppose any kind of pot related legislation, everything from decriminalization on down to medical use. I am really at a loss to why. I mean decriminalization would make your lives a lot easier. I have done a few ride a longs and I know that the volume of paperwork involved in booking an individual in jail is much bigger than a simple ticket. The only argument I have ever heard against medical that made any sense was from a county sheriff who said that it would create extra work for the officers to verify if someone was in fact licensed to be a medical user. That argument really doesn't hold water because almost all states require you to carry a card from the state saying its ok.

So far the only thinks I keep hearing are vague "for the children" type arguments that gun banners have been using forever. Now I don't want to turn this into a pot legalization debate, I know you guys don't make the laws but I would really like to understand this irrational fear.

Well this is the original poster, I am just curious as to why I was banned. I read over the TOS and the stickies before I posted and made sure that it was kosher.

I mean I could understand locking the topic or deleting it and letting me know but banning me for breaking a rule not posted anywhere? I sent an email to admin@realpolice.net assuming that was a real email address but if it is not would someone mind posting a real email address (this account will be banned soon I am sure so PMs would be useless).

I am very sorry if I offended anyone but I am more than a little baffled as to why someone felt the need to come down so hard.

Butters probably banned you because he knew this would turn in to a pissing match. Well, that and because he's a goober.

Well for the record I know its pretty well useless trying to win most cops over to the legalization side but that was never my goal, I just wanted to know your reasoning. I can understand keeping the forum clean but a ban for a first time offense of an unwritten rule hardly seems fair.

As you've noted, this isn't NORML or High Times magazine. Why do you think we'd want to hear your position on a substance that has been deemed illegal by Congress, who makes the laws.

Law Enforcement isn't pro or con anything, it just enforces the laws, as they've worn to do.

You bring nothing new to the topic, nor will you sway anyone here to your line of thinking.

Every couple of months one of you guys pop up here and things turn into a pissing match, where one of your side ultimately begin to call us out of our names and becomes quite disrespectful. Thus far this is a 100%.

Besides, if you really read the rules, you might have done something like introduce yourself and get to know our tiny little corner of cyber space. But you did what you all do, "Why do you cops hate marijuana?", as your first post.

If your best buddy is a cop, why don't you ask him that question and spare the rest of us with your rationalization.

The police exist, in part, to enforce the law. The other functions aren't needed for this discussion. Marijuana is against the law, therefore it is part of our job requirement to enforcement the law in regards to marijuana.

The police are part of the executive branch. We have very little to do with what laws are passed, and don't always have a choice is what or how laws are enforced.

Its the legislatures that make and change laws, in regards to state & federal law, your state and federal representatives and senators.

Also define decriminalization. In NY the dividing point between violation (a ticket) and misdemeanor (a crime) is 25 grams. Someone in a private home, who possesses a small amount of marijuana is not committing a "crime" in NY. Many people consider this a decriminalization, and there is no cry from law enforcement or others to change the law towards stricter enforcement, or a change in the amounts.

Driving under the influence of narcotics/marijuana is just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated by alcohol. Your motor skills and reactions, while not affected the SAME exact way, still are affected, and endanger yourself or others on the roadway.

Owning and possessing a firearm is a serious responsibility. People have accidental shootings while sober, and adding in an intoxicant which affects judgement can result in an accidental shooting (and now you're high while it occurs) or you get invovlved in a "bad shooting" due to your intoxication on the marijuana.

I mean, we're getting killed for these people and they don't even appreciate it. They think it's a big joke.

Sorry for you, but your post was not Kosher and hasn't been kosher for a new user for a couple of years now. You were notified of why you were banned.

    I call B.S.

How is your best buddy a cop and you smoke?

As to your question try a search, as BIG stated it shows up here ever few months or just google it. I'm sure you can find arguments for both sides.

As far as the medical MJ goes...Federal Law states that MJ is illegal so I don't care if you have a card from some quack doctor or not if I find it on you you get arrested.

You claim you are just curious. However, the above closing, by you, clearly states exactly how you feel.

With this in mind, there is no reason to expect reasonable dialogue; you have already made up your mind.

Sit at home, get some munchies, smoke a really good doobie, and watch the cartoon channel. You will get more entertainment out of that than trying to stir the pot with a bunch of cops. ;)
