    Jury duty question

There is a certain officer I know ;) that received a subpoena in the mail to serve 2 weeks on jury duty. Does him being an officer somehow disqualify him from that? He doesn't know yet. Out of curiousity I looked at his court schedule and out of the 10 days he has 8 days of show-ups and/or call ins. Several of the days he has both. Just wondering how that works.

I don't think that is the case in Ohio but I believe it should be. Just simply because the way they view the court process is not necessarily like "a jury of your peers" (or however it's said..... I'm tired.) Not to mention, what happens with the subpoenas he has already been issued?

In Ohio, you are not exempt. It used to be if you were "attorneys, physicians, dentists, elected public officials, and persons over the age of 70 all were exempt from jury service; however, they now may be called for jury duty. (Ohio Rev. Code. §2313.16)"

But now, only cloistered members of religious organizations are exempt from jury service.

If its for a civil case, theres a chance this certain person may be picked. But for a criminal one, its quite rare.

Sec. 2313.16. Except as provided by section 2313.13 of the 56

Revised Code, the court of common pleas shall not excuse a 57

person, liable to serve as a juror and drawn and notified, unless 58

it is shown to the satisfaction of the judge by either the juror 59

or another person acquainted with the facts, that: 60

    (A) The juror is then necessarily absent from the county, 62

and will not return in time to serve;. 63

    (B) The interests of the public, or of the juror, will be 65

materially injured by the juror's attendance;. 66

    (C) The juror is physically unable to serve;. 68

    (D) The juror's spouse, or a near relative of the juror or 70

the juror's spouse, has recently died or is dangerously ill;. 72

    (E) The juror had been called as a juror for trial in a 74

court of record in the county within the same jury year. 75

When a person liable to serve is excused, in a case 77

specified in this section, or when a person notified to attend a 78

term as a juror is entitled to and claims an exemption, the juror 79

can be excused only by the judge presiding or a representative of 80

the judge. Such an excuse shall not extend beyond that term. 81

Every approved excuse shall be recorded and filed with the jury 82

    commissioners.

I got a notice one time , called the courthouse and was told to write my job info on the notice and send it back. I never heard anything back.

I am sure a defense attorney would be quick to strike me from any panel....I might believe the officer more than the defendant

I've been a registered voter since 1968. I have been called once for jury duty in a criminal matter.

For some reason it was felt that as the arresting officer and lead prosecution witness I might not be an inpatial juror.

I wanted to call the court and see if I could take his place. I could get $20 per day and get a break from the kids! In my opinion it is a win win. :D

I've been called up twice - once when I was due to start the academy in what would've been the middle of the trial, so when the Judge asks if there is any reason you can't do it, I gave that and he sent me on my way with a smile on his face saying 'see in my court sometime in the future then'.

The other time I had been in for a couple years, and I'm not allowed to do it, even if I wanted to.

Funny isn't it? We are not allowed to do it here, as it is seen that we might be biased.

However they will let some repeat offender do it.

    Pathetic!!

Here in New York, it's one of the first questions they ask you. To say that jury duty stinks in New York is the understatement of a lifetime. You're pretty much called in for an entire week and you sit in an old courtroom reading a book for 8 hours a day waiting to be called. Sometimes you are, sometimes you're not. It's somewhat entertaining to watch other people's reaction to the experience. Alot of people run up to the court officers trying to plead how important they are and need to leave, and the court officers just tell them to take a seat.

Working as a court officer in that room must really bite.

Spent nearly 2 weeks in jury duty....

    Civil case...

    She was awarded....

    NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D:D:D

I DETEST.....DETEST people who lie....ON THE STAND no less.

When I sat on that seat, for the voire dire process...(2 HOURS worth of questioning.... ), there was NO way I could lie about anything.

THe plaintiff LIED about EVERYTHING. Hence...she got nothing.

I thought it was fun; AND was payed for it. :D:D:D
