    coast guard / nypd

Hello again, thanks to everyone who's advised me thus far.

Tomorrow, I'm meeting with a Coast Guard recruiter. Can anyone tell me what to expect / look for?
In another thread, someone mentioned that they (can) offer different people different things for enlistment - I want to get whatever I can out of the deal;).
I'm interested in college credits / police-related experiance/specialitys, and really anything relevant to law enforcement, money/benefits, and the like.

    Some questions I have:

I understand that I'd be singing up for a mandatory 8 year commitment, any chance of getting an honrable discharge within 2 so I could get started with the NYPD? I'm takeing the test in June.
What happens after you're discharged, do you stay in the Reserves/how regularly are people called out - and do the NYPD pay you for time you spend with the Coast Guard?
On that note, will 2 years+ with the CC meet the PD's 2 years military experience requirement?

And finally, how long does it take, generally, before one is shipped out to basic training from the time one signs the contract?

What kind of specialitys can I ask to be invovled in?

The rest I figure I'll learn once I'm enlisted.

Thanks - any info you can offer me in respect to my questions, or any related info, is appreciated (for whatever that's worth:rolleyes

    See ya!

I don't have military. I could tell you officers in the nypd in the reserves coastguard, army, etc, get time off when called for duty and the dept pays you. You can try Navy for 3-5 years and use that toward military for the nypd and buy back some time if you get hired. If you have a high school diploma or ged, you can try two years of college and get in. Coastguard to get you into harbor unit?

I think he meant that you can save time by use military to meet some of the NYPD requirements.

Military can be used instead of college to get in for hiring purposes. With 3 years of military the city will let you buy that time for a certain amount of money. Instead of doing 20 years you just need to do 17. The officers I work with that have a military background are using the gibill money toward college to seek promotions and have the option to retire early with full pension. Not a bad deal. There is a tiny chance you can make harbor. I wouldn't bet on it unless you have a hook.

If you sign a contract you cant just say hey thanks for the experience Ive had enough I'm taking my toys and going home it doesnt work that way. You MUST fulfill all your contractual obligations before getting out.

Yeah I get it, I'm wondering what the options are insofar as [my] contractual obligations / are they same for everyone, can you negotiate different deals with the recruiters, etc...

    USCG Reserves is 8 years.

6 years of reserve drilling status, and 2 of individual ready reserve.

Thanks bro... too bad I went over there, got interviewed and filled out all the paperwork - I even had a few burgers with the recruiters, THEN they told me I'm gonna need 15 college credits to enlist.

Franky, don't mention to bring up in the interviews that you are a racist and have taken part in racist activities as per your own admissions.

    Good luck with that.

    1) Not your bro.
    2) That is what they tell people when they want to nicely tell you "We don't want you".
