I started my internship just outside of Pittsburgh, PA on Tuesday, and just got back for the day today. So far, I've done many things in the police station in the Records office. I've been filing police reports, filing Daily Activity Reports, Accident Reports, removing cases from the open cases to "closed" after we get the court dispositions, and mailing accident reports to insurance companies and investigators.
I've been learning a lot about the "paperwork" end of the department, and I'm really glad that I'm in the office to start because I'm able to check out the reports, and learn the lingo for the PA statutes (abbreviations, etc). Additionally, I'm getting to know the officers as they stop in to get their reports to prepare for court. I pulled approximately 200 "open" cases today to prepare to update the computer system and enter the court disposition, which will be started tomorrow.
I love the atmosphere, the supervisors, and the work thus far. I start marked patrol next week and I get to pick either the 8 am to 4 pm shift or the 4 pm to 12 pm shift. After about 60 hours in a marked unit I get to spend time with the detectives which includes narcotics, juvenile, homicide, as well as one other unit.
I will update periodically.
I'm one happy kid!
