"Get me the fire department over here," said Hawks, shot twice while investigating a complaint against 50-year-old Ronald Burke. "I'm dying. I'm dying, man. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. Hurry, I can't breathe."
In a 1-minute, 11-second call to 911 obtained by The Associated Press from the St. Clair County Central Dispatch Authority through a Freedom of Information Act request, Hawks is reassured by a dispatcher that help is on the way.
"I know buddy. Hang on, Ray," Dave Ponke said. "They're coming Ray. We have help coming.
"Can you somehow get out of the way so he can't get you anymore?"
A panting Hawks replied: "If the police car pulls up here, he can get me out of the way. Tell him to pull up here. I can't move. I can't breathe.
"Hurry, I'm dying. I'm dying. Tell them to hurry!"
The 911 audio was one of several tapes released Thursday afternoon by the Dispatch Authority.
Hawks, 64, was shot twice with a .22-caliber rifle about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. St. Clair County sheriff's deputy Tim O'Boyle suffered a grazing wound to his head after two additional shots blasted through the windshield of his police car.
"Send backup! We're both hit. Send backup!" O'Boyle yells into his radio. "Chief's down ... in front of the house. I'm hit in the head."
On a second tape, O'Boyle can be heard saying the suspect had gone back into the house.
