    Uniform Cost

    I've looked all over the forum and researched various questions pertaining to this topic. No joy as to my questions on this topic which follows;

How much do your Class A and Class B uniforms cost?
Please do not include all you guys and gals out there who work special details and UC. I understand your uniform/clothing costs are probably alot higher.

How much is your uniform allowance (if you receive one)?

How much is your actual/estimated dry cleaning per year (if you use such service)?

How often do you replace your uniform and under what conditions(i.e...torn, faded, blood contamination)?

I'm curious for the fact that sometime in the next year, I plan to put together a uniform "point paper" to change my departments patrol uniform requirements. IMHO, our uniforms (Class A/B) are just too expensive to be used in a patrol environment.

Thanks in advance for the replies.:D

Well I guess I can count myself lucky. I pay nothing for any part of my uniform, the department issues everything. Our uniforms are all able to be washed at home so I toss them in with other clothes. We have to replace them if they are torn or worn, blood can be washed out so they won't replace it for that unless they are totally soaked.

Come to think of it, I should've asked before I even posted, uh, what's a class A/B?

Uniform supplied at first (2 sets of pants and shirts, vest, hat, coat, and raincoat) then you get $100 every 6 months in your allowance. You can bank that and get something nice, but if you have to replace a shirt that is on your dime. But I am only part-time so I don't get the $100. The department supplies new shirts every 2 years. Unless you need to buy a new one (torn, blood.....etc) then you get to purchuse it, unless you have money in your allowance.

My initial issue ran in excess of $600, all paid by Uncle Sam, of which I wear very little other than the duty rig. A replacement Class A LS shirt and pant is $60.00. I wear navy BDUs, which run $81 a set. I do not know how much the armour or weapon ran; the Surefire runs about $60 retail.

    Annual allowance is $800.

Drycleaning runs about $7.50 for a set of Class A/B. I wash my BDUs.

I just got out of the academy in December and have only had to replace the holster after it got squashed on the flight back from the academy. My current Blackhawk Serpa ran $45; I am likely to replace it with the Blackhawk Serpa duty holster (rides lower, like a normal holster). I have replaced parts of my rig for peices more to my liking.

I don't pay a dime for my uniforms and they are machine washable. About once a month I haul them to the dry cleaners to get a nice steam ironing with razor sharp creases.

    I don't get a uniform allowance. Investigators get $250 a year.

Jake: our class A uni is long sleeve w/tie. Class B would be BDU's if you have them.

Uni allowance is $700 per year. We get an account and can order a lot of uniform and non-uniform stuff though the dept tax free. Dig Cameras, clipboards , long johns etc. Cannot carry over more than $150 into the following year.

Cleaning is $30 per month included in our pay.

Dept provides ALL leather gear and replaces it when needed.

Dress uni is $275 and the dept provides the dress leathers.

Our regular uniform shirts/pants are wool and are around $80 EACH. Red the Uniform Tailor in NJ.

The dept will replace any uniforms damaged in the line of duty.

In the department where I retired from, the department supplied everyone with uniforms. We would take them to the dry cleaners and sign the slip and they would send the bill to the department. The officers had zero costs.
