I've taken to using an earpiece too. I can't hear anything out on he floor without cranking my radio. Also it's nice when someone jerk-off isn't overhearing your radio traffic.

That's hysterical!!! I was in roll call one day, and an important broadcast came over, and EVERYONE cocked their head to one side to hear. LMAO! I love it.

I like the earpiece idea... Last thing you want is the perp to hear the radio broadcast where dispatch tells you about his warrants...

There is a documented case here in Portland where the audible traffic coming from an officer's radio projected his position to a hiding suspect. It was determined by an independent review that that was a contributor to a subsequent shooting:

This comes from the Police Assessment Resource Center, an independent think tank which has shaped the policies of many major departments across the nation.

    Radio Noise
The problem of noise from personal radios betraying officers’ presence to suspects arose in two cases we reviewed.

    Recommendation:
This noise problem could easily be avoided if the PPB provided its officers with radio earpieces, a relatively inexpensive step we recommend the PPB take without delay. The need for stealth is not uncommon in police work. Without earpieces, officers must risk their radios being heard or render themselves uncontactable by turning down the volume. Neither of these options is compatible with risk-conscious police operations.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
This think tank was hired to only review cases where an officer involved shooting has occurred and during a 3 year period. So when they say the problem arose in 2 cases, these are 2 officer-involoved shooting cases.

The cost to outfit an officer with an earpiece is just over $100. The Bureau has announced their intention to purchase an earpiee for every officer here:

Radio earpieces provided to some units; Fiscal will develop a
budget package. The Bureau believes this will have significant
    fiscal impact.

The chief has subsequently announced the intention at a roll call.
