I saw a statistic somewhere that detroit police has killed more people than other other department in the past 2 years or so.

i cant remember the detail, please correct me if i'm wrong, but you get the idea of what i'm trying to say.

I think it is safe to say that from my observations, i have seen kids that could be in high school directing traffic in a Detroit PD Uniform.

what did the feds do? what was wrong with the dept?

There is just a lot of corruption. That happens to a department that is under weak leadership and way understaffed. Imagine having to keep a list of 12 calls backlogged and none of them go answered until you are finished with everything else that is "a higher priority". Like helping school children cross the street, while someone is being murdered two blocks down and there isn't anything you can do about it, because you have to cross the kids. Just the way it goes down there.

They also don't help the matter by pretty much allowing an open door policy on anyone who wants to join the department. You get a lot of people that skip or float thru psych. (sp).

Hey - Eddie Murphy was there. So was Robocop. It can't be all bad.

Just to add to DC Law's comments since he mentioned Larry Nevers...check out this web site:

    http://www.larrynevers.com/

Personally, I think it is a well-thought out sight with a lot of interesting information about what has happened to Nevers over the last several years...what he's gone though, IMO, IS tragic and obscene!!! Check it out and make your own conclusions.

I don't know anyone who is working or has worked for DPD but I know there must be some good cops on that department working among the ones who have tarnished that badge. (Course, this is true at most any PD out there too!) Therefore, I mean no disrespect to any honorable DPD officer out there...

I have generally heard, as already mentioned, that Detroit has plenty of action and plenty of shooting going on most any day of the week. And, I too have heard that they are apparently in the midst of having the FEDS overseeing their department because of the corruption problems. Detroit has a far-reaching infamous reputation of being a VERY TOUGH city to be a cop!

A few years ago, we had an applicant who applied for our PD who was a DPD officer. He could not pass the psych exam so we rejected him. But the few stories he told us about, (Assuming just half the stories are credible and true), would make you cringe! Just general stuff about cops breaking into other cop's lockers, shooting at each other and driving around on duty intoxicated! It's nuts!

Course...in all fairness to Detroit..., what is happening at DPD in terms of good cops leaving in droves isn't something just happening in Detroit. A lot of large urban cities have/are experiencing similar circumstances...and amazingly, city leaders across the country are scratching their heads and wondering WHY??
