Question Vehicle Inspection? What is it?

In Michigan we don't have this but I've read about how people have to take their vehicle in and also some states have "inspection stickers"

Do they just look over your car once a year to make sure its safe and everything? How much does it cost? Kind of a waste of money I would think, but thats coming from someone who has never had to do it.

What do they look for? If something is wrong, what happens?

Curious as I said, since the state of Michigan doesn't have this...

its mainly to make sure your car meets the state's emissions standards

We have a safety and an emission annual inspection. You can pass one and fail the other etc.

The cost here is around $40 for both. They check tires , brakes, glass, lights , steering etc. And depending on the year of the car, hook the car up to an exhaust sniffer.

Safety Inpsection is a GOOD thing as some people will spend money on cases of beer instead of brakes.

Commercial vehicles must be inspected every 6 months.

Vehicles are required to maintain their safety 12 months a year.

" Inspection is one day at the garage and the other 364 days it is the job of the police to do so." We have a special section called Inspection By Police. We have the authority to inspect cars , not up on a lift and even to require a car be re-inspected at a garage if we feel it is not safe. We can also mandate that a vehicle not be driven if it does not pass a secondary police ordered inspection.

All in all , it is a GOOD thing.

When I was stationed in Montana in the USAF, there was NO inspection at all and some of the vehicles looked BAD.

Cost here is about $30. They check brakes, lights, exhaust system, and check to make sure nothing is rusted through like engine mounts that would make the vehicle unsafe to drive

If it passes you get a yellow sticker. If not you get a pink rejection sticker. This sticker gives you 15 days to fix the rejected part. If you bring it back to the same inspection station within the 15 days, you don't pay for an entire inspection again. After 15 days, you have to pay for the whole thing over again.

The rejection stickers only allow driving to the inspection station and garage to fix the part. Many people think it gives them 15 days to drive wherever they go. If I see a rejection sticker on a car it gives me automatic RS to conduct a stop because A) they aren't supposed to be driving it and B) it means something on the car makes it not roadworthy

Here are the detailed state inspection procedures:

    http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Safety.sh...pectionProgram

It's $16.00 bucks where I'm at. It's also a pain in the *** because the inspection takes all of 20 minutes but typically there is a 2+ hour wait for them to get to your car.

So do they still have to REGISTER their vehicles? I would be mad, I had to pay $80 for my registration sticker (which I don't have a problem with), but i would hate to have to pay another $80 to get my vehicle inspected (even though it would pass)!

Yes, registration is a separate issue. Cars are $36 a year and you can have a valid tag and expired inspection.

We allow people with expired inspection to drive after it is out BUT...

    1. It has to be within 10 days of the expiration

    and

    2. They have to have already made an apointment AND be on their way to the appointment.

Expired inspection is a $108 fine. Technically , I can have it towed but usually don't.

Expired inspection on a truck larger than 17,000 GVW is a $100-$500 fine and it must be towed.

I've been in states that don't require an inspection and I see a ton of cars broke down on the side of the road. Also I see a lot of cars that look very unsafe.

I see a lot of undesirable cars registered in Ohio and driven in Pittsburgh. They dont have inspections in Ohio and the cars look like Sanford and Son quality

    Agreed, mcsap!

I'm not sure, but I don't think Tennessee requires a safety inspection - at least I don't recall seeing stickers on any windshields when I was there recently, and you should have seen some of the cars/trucks that I saw when I was down there. They looked liked they'd fall apart if you even touched them! I don't know how some of them were running.

Texas has an annual inspection requirement. Basically they honk the horn, count the lug nuts, check the lights and make sure there are no gaping holes in the exhaust system. Costs $12.00. They put a sticker in the lower left corner of the windshield, the registration sticker goes above it.

In GA, all you need inspected is the emission system. The hook a computer up under the dash, press a few buttons, and print off a sheet of paper. 19 bucks.
