In my part of Virginia we have no emission inspection. I heard that some parts of NOVA may have that.

    NY is annual.

Brand new cars are only subject to equipment inspection when purchased, and at 1 year. After that its equipment and emissions. Equipment I believe is $10, equipment + emissions is $37 in the NY Metro Area, $21 elsewhere.

NYMA = NYC (all 5 boroughs), Long Island (nassau & suffolk), Westchester and Rockland counties.

The cost of my vehicle registration + safety inspection in VA is less than I paid to register my vehicle in MI and FL when I lived in those states. It's also cheaper than family that lives in IL pays.

This will be my first year paying personal property tax on my suv, so I won't be able to say that next year. But that's a whole other thread ;)

I guess it depends on where you live and who does your inspection. The guy I goto does a very good inspection. Checks the breaks, lights, test drives the vehicle.

As stated an inspection is a good thing but $40  that seems high. It's only $12 here in TX

Oklahoma used to charge $5 a year for an inspection. Now, what kind of inspection do you think occured for $5? The fee was split between the state and the inspection shop, so you were asking the shop to spend 20-30 minutes of their time for $2.50.

Eventually, they did away with inspections and raised the price of vehicle registration to compensate for the lost funds.

IMO, this was a mistake as there are a fair amount of unsafe vehicles on the Oklahoma roadways.

Are you paying for the inspections to be done through a third party or are you doing it through the DMV? In NJ if you do it through the DMV its free
