Got the strangest call from the local PD this morning.

About 7:30 this am the phone rang.

"Hello, this is the Ramapo Police Dept..."

The message was a recorded message, I assume sent using a WarDialer, to notify people in the area about a missing EDP.

I was semi-annoyed because I generally sleep 12-8, but it was a legitimate good cause so I couldn't be too angry.

Just wondering if auto-dial notifications like this are used by a lot of depts.

We started this last year. Two years ago we had a train crash in a residential area (about 3/4 mile from my house!!!), and we started the system after that to warn people to stay indoors/evacuate, etc. A few months ago a tanker truck crashed and exploded in another residential area, so we tried to implement the system, but the fire raged too much.

We have a nuclear power plant, so we had a call system for that in place, but that is different.

Unfortunately, we have had the group phone call system in place for all the employees in my dept for a few years now. :(

Nick, I didn't know you lived here! :D

Realistically, that could be quite a system if they fired it off for every bolo or 1096 (EDP) running loose. I do like the disaster function, it makes sense.

What are the legal specifics to classify someone as a EDP? All kidding aside, curiosity has gotten the better of me.

We have no such means. If we do this it will be by the PA system on the patrol car.

When I work 3 rd shift I turn the phone off in my bedroom and wear foam earplugs. Call all you want , I won't hear a thing.;)

See now I like the idea of getting a phone call. I haven't seen the 'emergency broadcast' test warning in a while, so maybe my town has gone to this. I wonder if the Emergency Broadcast thing was used on 9/11.
