Score one for the good guys!

Score one for the good guys!!! As soon as I got in to work last night, I had an officer-involved shooting. The 2 coppers were riding with each other (each in their own car) and attempted a traffic stop on 2 guys in a car. I can't get into specific details, but the guys came out of the car shooting. The good Lord was smiling on my boys because they didn't get hit, but they hit the dude 5 times!
About an hour later, we had an officer ride by our office and see a guy laying in the road 1/2 block away, shot. He started screaming out on the air.... and so lovely that we could see the crime scene when we walked out our front door.
To top all that off, the higher-ups decided that they were bored, so they gave us a test scenerio for disaster recovery. They made us act like a tanker filled with some kind of chemical had crashed outside the building and was on fire. We had to evacuate (not actually, but go through the motions), make broadcasts on the air, make pages, call people, yeck!!!
What a night! I get to work, sit down, and wham! Non-stop until I got relieved this morning.
I sent my guys a city-wide MDT message. It went something like this:
"On behalf of all your dispatchers tonight, I would like to commend all the officers and bosses on the outstanding job you all did tonight. We ran you all over the city to cover calls, and you took it all in stride and rose to the occasion. You do an exceptional job every day, and today was no different, but we want you to know that the extra effort you put forth tonight has not gone un-noticed." Blah blah blah.. LOL.. it was something like that. These guys need kudos sometimes.

I hope nobody takes offense to me calling them my boys/guys. In our LE family, I am the momma and wife of these guys and gals. :D The guys have always told me they liked hearing me refer to them in such a possessive manner because they know I will be watching out for them.

My county has its moments, and that's what I love. This is only the second officer-involved shooting this year (last one was in July on my birthday). I was lucky enough to be working the other half of the city that night.
I worry about one of the officers though. I hope he can handle the repercussions. (He's brand new). Any of you cops know what I can do to help him out?
Thanks for the nice comment, HK. Talk about sad, though.. last year, one of my guys spent all night going from location to location looking for a missing kid. I was so impressed with his dedication (we don't normally have the time to search), I made him Buckeyes (homemade peanut butter cups). LOL...

This is the article in the paper this morning... *the dude's name has been changed to protect the stupid.
    --------------------------------------------

Ricardo (****) Head left his home Saturday night to pick up cigarettes and milk for his mother, family members said.
But the 18-year-old did not return. Instead, DickHead ended up at the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, the result of a dramatic shootout with police on the Avenue.

DickHead, police said, opened fire on two officers as they approached his car during a traffic stop. He continued to fire at police, getting off another two rounds before the officers brought him down with gunfire of their own, police said.

The two officers shot at DickHead 19 times.

A police investigation has been launched, but Police Chief said Sunday that he already has enough information — particularly from eyewitnesses — to conclude that the officers’ shooting was justified.

“He (DickHead) fired without any provocation,” Chief said. “The two officers did exactly what I would expect them to do when confronted with a life-threatening situation. They showed tremendous courage, and I’m extremely proud of them.”

But the DickHead family expressed anger and confusion at the amount of force. Doctors at the hospital told the family that DickHead received seven gunshot wounds in the torso and one leg. As of Sunday night, he was in stable condition, the family said.

Outside the DickHead family home at (they gave the house address!!) , Harry ****, Ricardo’s father, said that he is seeking answers. “I’m just confused,” said Harry ****, 46.

“I don’t know why there had to be so many shots.”

Chief said the incident began about 11:55 p.m. Saturday when the two officers —(named the ofcrs)— were riding in their police cruiser on the Avenue. They spotted a white Acura Legend with a license plate that matched a vehicle wanted in connection with a robbery, Chief said.

Officers followed the car in their cruiser. When the cruiser’s lights and sirens came on, the driver of the car turned into a driveway at 880, Chief said.

The officers got out of their cruiser and approached the Acura. Chief said the driver, Ricardo Head, suddenly opened his car door and fired a shot at the officers. Ofcr #1 was less than 10 feet away, with Ofcr #2 a few feet behind him.

Miraculously, Chief said, neither officer was hit. But DickHead continued to fire — he got off another two shots — as he ran away down the Avenue, police said.

The officers responded by firing back. Ofcr #2 fired 13 times, Ofcr #1 six.

In explaining the amount of force, Chief said officers are trained to fire “until the threat ceases.” In this case, Chief said, the officers’ actions were “by the book.”

Eyewitnesses, including a woman who watched the shootout from her nearby car, support the officers’ version of the story: Dickhead fired the first shot, and he was unprovoked, Chief said.

The officers are emotionally traumatized and will be assigned to desk jobs for the immediate future, Chief said. Ofcr #2 has been on the police force for a little more than five years, Ofcr #1 just over one.

In November 2000, someone fired shots at — but missed — Ofcr #2 and another officer who were responding to a 911 call. The officers did not see the shooter at the time of the shooting.

A teenager suspected in the shooting was later arrested.

City Council members were dismayed by Saturday’s shooting but said it appears the actions by police were justified. Chief notified several of them Sunday morning.

City Council members said the shooting seems to be a routine traffic stop turned bad.

“I’m just wondering whether some of these young guys with a gun just don’t have the maturity to know what to do when,” council member said.

Another council member said she may reach out to the Dickhead family.

“We have to do more,” she said.

“We have to come together with the community.”

Police last shot a suspect in July. Officer shot a man five times near St. Street after the man shot at the officer first, police said.

Once DickHead is medically cleared, he is expected to be arraigned on two counts of first-degree attempted murder; second-degree criminal possession of a weapon; and criminal possession of stolen property.

DickHead's gun — a .357-caliber Magnum pistol — was reported stolen in a burglary several years ago (**I TOLD THEM THAT ... LOL) , chief said. Police also found a “small quantity” of drugs in the Acura.

DickHead family members said they have no information about the Acura being connected to a previous robbery. Hor Bag, DickHead's mother, said the car is hers.

They said Ricardo Head is not the kind of person who would get into a shootout with police. DickHead attended High School until last year.

He has a live-in girlfriend and together they have a 2-year-old son.

Nice name replacement! LOL. Sounds like the city council there is like ours. Against any police action if the people (voters) see it wrong. Needless to say, there are many "Vote 'em all out!" signs and bumper stickers in the city, some of which belong to LEOs.

The thing that got me was that the family tried to hurt my officers. They didn't react to the news by calling the media or their lawyer... they reacted by violent means. It was quite a scene for a while at the hospital and the scene.
And they can still wonder why this kid did this? If they are going to react by physically attacking the cops and threaten to shoot the cop in the back, then why should they be suprised that this kid did it?

And actually, Ricardo is the kids real name... LOL.. it fits.
