Sheriff's Deputy VS. Municipal Police Officers

I was wondering, are there any differences in the duties of a Sheriff's Deputy VS a Police Officer?

Many... But where you live depends upon the duties of each.

In Colorado we (the Sheriff's Office) are required by statute to provide a jail, serve civil papers and respond to civil unrest in the County... That's it. but most SOs provide LE duties as well. Where I work, we do not handle traffic accidents, but handle just about everything else. My area is 2958 square miles where the average PD is less than 10 square miles in the county.

If you want more info than that, you will have to be more specific;)

Well, the departments I'd like to know about are the Houston PD and the Harris County Sheriff's Office. I'm considering moving there to be a cop because I've always wanted to live in Texas.

Maybe you could contact those particular agencies and find out? You could also do a search - this topic has been covered before (and the answer is IT DEPENDS)...

Police get to wear cool midnight blue uniforms while deputies have to wear tacky brown and get cowflop on their shoes. :D

I'm sorry, I went through the "ask-a-cop" section (where this was originally posted) and didn't see anything.

Also, it would be cheaper to find out if there was someone who knew here then to make a long distance phone call.

Thats only because when we went to the semi wreck, you were standing around in your cool blue uniform. While we were busy working the accident, the only question from you was "what do I do now?" LOL

    PS, its gray, not brown.......................
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL

Go on ride alongs with the agencies you are considering and see what fits you best. There are differences and it all depends on your personality what will fit you best.

I faintly remember tan uniforms back when I started.
And I was a Police Officer. The worst part was the brown

Oddly enough it's state law here for all deputies to wear brown uniforms... how weird is that?

We wear blue, the state police get to wear the brown here.

We are also a full service Sheriff's Office, handle all types of calls. This may change in the future however if you saw one of my previous threads.

    Actual conversation with suspect
Suspect: Why am I under arrest?
    Me: For posession of CDS.
Suspect: Man, it wasn't CDS! It was E pills!
