    Question Cell phones-illegal?

Where I used to live (Metro Detroit), there is a few towns that have made it illegal to use your cell phone and drive. In the State of Michigan, it is not state law yet.

When I have driven into these towns, there are no signs or anything stating it is illegal to use your cell phone while driving. Only reason I know that they passed local ordinances/laws whatever on this is through family that lives in the area still.

Also, if you get a "ticket" for using your cell phone, what type of ticket is it? I don't see where it would be the "Michigan Uniformed Citation" form so was just wondering.

I would think they would have to have it posted (kind of the signs that say No Parking on Any Street between 3am-6am kinda deal) at the city/township line.

I'm gonna guess and say local ordinance, but I could be wrong.

In Connecticut, it's illegal for anyone but on-duty emergency personnel to use a cell phone (without a hands free device) while operating a motor vehicle. However, I have yet to see any signs posted anywhere.

Well from what I was told, Southfield, Livonia, Canton (I think) Plymouth City/Township, and a few others are part of the ban.

I haven't seen any signs posted either so that got me wondering whats going on with that. If they even could or whatever

In Pennsylvania, you are still allowed to use a cell phone while driving. There is one town in my county that passed an ordinance against cell phone use while driving in their town. They have signs posted as you enter into the town.

Well there is a court case that stated that the township was not allowed to enforce the ordinance, since the driving laws come under the state law.

There is even an attorney that stated that anyone who receives a citation from this township for using a cell phone, he will represent them for free.

I thought they had passed something in Ohio about not using your cell phone unless it's hands free but then was told they actually haven't...however, technically if an officer wants to they can pull you over for not giving your full attention to the road, which would be the same kind of ticket they'd write for people putting on makeup, eating, etc which, from my understanding, they typically only bother to do if they're already pulling you over for something else (like running a red light because you were busy talking on your phone, putting on your lipstick, and not paying attention to driving).

Here, some city Ordinances can be written on a Uniform Traffic Ticket... depending on the type.

Some counties in NY passed the law before it was a state law, and it was enforceable. Was the case upheld?

I lived up in Chicago when they passed the no cell while driving, but from what an officer calling into one of the WLSAM talk shows said, it would only be cited if the driver was involved in an accident. So far, the nany state regulation has not reached my current state of Indiana.
