2 Officers Wounded, Suspect Killed In Shootout

Men Fire At Officers At Budget Inn In Burbank, Officers Return Fire

    Feb 19, 2008 8:34 am US/Central

BURBANK, Ill. (CBS) ― Two police officers in southwest suburban Burbank were hit by gunfire in a shootout overnight before returning fire and shooting the suspects, one fatally.

As CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman reports, Burbank police received a 911 call around 8:55 p.m. about a man with a gun at the Budget Inn Motel, at 8450 S. Cicero Ave. The caller reported two men who might have been in room 16 or 17, Burbank police said. A woman was also in the room with the gunman, police said.

Responding officers came to the second floor balcony and attempted to make contact with the occupants of Room 17, but people in the room fired shots at the officers, who returned fire, police said.

One officer suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and the other suffered a gunshot wound to the hand, police said. Burbank Fire Department Chief Tim Kaufmann said the officer shot in the hand was also shot twice in the chest, but was protected by a bullet-resistant vest.

Hitendra Gandhi was on the first floor of the motel at the time of the shooting, and said he did not hear the gunshots.

"When the police came, then I came to know that something happened," Gandhi said.

Other witnesses described what they saw and heard.

"I just heard a lot of gunshots," one woman said. "I don't know what kind of gun it was." She said she saw officers shoot first, but police said that was not the case.

"These people got gunned down. I don't know what happened over there," a man said. "It sounded ugly to me – terribly ugly."

The officers were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with non-life-threatening injuries, Kaufmann said.

One suspect was dead on the scene. Kendall Virgil, of 512 W. 57th St. in Chicago, was pronounced dead at 5:05 a.m. at the Stein Institute, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. An autopsy will be performed later Tuesday.

A miniature machine-gun and a semi-automatic handgun were recovered from the scene, Burbank police Capt. Joseph Ford said Tuesday at 7:15 a.m.

The second gunman was taken to Christ Medical Center in an unidentified condition, where he remained in police custody early Tuesday.

The unarmed woman was not injured and is being interviewed by police. She is also facing charges and is considered a suspect, Ford said.

"Everybody's a suspect until the investigation is complete," Ford said.

Police are also talking to witnesses, including the person who called 911, Ford said.

Police recovered a MasterPiece Arms 9 mm with two 30-round clips taped to each side and a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun, said Ford said, who described the MasterPiece Arms as "mini-machinegun knockoff."

The weapons were found "in close proximity to where they were shot," Ford said.

Chicago Police and several suburban police departments reported to the scene. Afterward, police showed up at Christ Hospital to support the officers who were wounded.

Illinois State Police are assisting in the investigation.

CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman and the STNG Wire contributed to this report.

    Shot Illinois Officers Recovering

    Posted: Wednesday, February 20, 2008

Two veteran Burbank police officers were recovering Tuesday after being wounded during a shootout at a motel in which another man was killed, officials said.

A second man was wounded Monday night after police responded to a call of an armed man at a motel. When shots rang out from a room, the officers fired back, authorities said. One officer might have been killed if not for his bulletproof vest, authorities said.

Police are investigating whether both or only one of the men fired at the officers, who were released from the hospital but were shaken up, said police Capt. Joseph Ford.

"They're doing well physically," he said. "It was a very traumatic experience."

Shortly before 9 p.m., Burbank police got a 911 call from the Budget Inn Motel, 8450 S. Cicero Ave., a few miles south of Midway Airport. As officers stood outside a second-floor room trying to make contact with the occupants, shots were fired from inside the room, authorities said.

One officer, a 19-year veteran, was struck twice in the chest, but the bullets did not penetrate his bulletproof vest. The second officer, who has 24 years of service, had a minor wound in his leg, Ford said. Both were treated at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

No charges had been filed late Tuesday.

The two men inside the motel room had outstanding warrants for previous cases and were considered to be armed and dangerous, police said. One, Kendall Virgil, 18, of the 500 block of West 57th Street in Chicago, died at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Virgil had an outstanding warrant for a weapons offense from the Cook County sheriff's police, Ford said.

The other man, identified as Charles Littlejohn, 23, of the 5700 block of South Union Avenue in Chicago, was shot twice and taken to Christ Medical Center. He underwent surgery Tuesday, Ford said. A hospital spokeswoman said his condition was upgraded to fair.

Littlejohn had two outstanding warrants for resisting a peace officer and for traffic offenses, authorities said. Those warrants were issued by McHenry County officials and the Rockford Police Department, Ford said. Littlejohn will be held on those warrants after he is released from the hospital.

Ford said two guns were found at the scene, a 9 mm with two 30-round clips and a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber. Both weapons have been sent to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

He could not say whether Virgil and Littlejohn were both firing at police.

The shooting was under investigation by Burbank police, Illinois State Police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force.

Police Chief Bruce Radowicz said there was a third person, a woman, inside the motel room, but he would not release her identity. She was being questioned as well.

Radowicz said police did not know what the two men were doing in the room.

"We knocked on the door; that was as far as we got," he said. "I don't know what their intentions were -- if they were just hiding out from the police because of the warrants or not."

They might not have meant it in a bad way. ;)

But seriously, when did we have to wait to be shot at to shoot at some armed and dangerous criminal??

I am guessing that they had no real valid reason to have a "mini-machine gun".

Glad the officers weren't injured more seriously! This type of incident (upstairs contact at a motel) happens all the time. It would be good to discuss this in briefing and/or with your shiftmates from an officer safety perspective. There isn't much room upstairs - what if SHTF? A few years ago, Deputy Mike Arruda was tragically killed during a similar type of call... :(

Yep, not much cover. The same reason I hate approaching mobile homes on hot calls. Gotta stay on your toes and remember tactics.

I'm not saying it is a mini-machine gun, just pointing out that the report stated that was what it was.

    Same as "assault weapon".

If I was to beat someone with a stick and therefore assault them with a weapon, does that make it an assault weapon, coz if so, they better ban trees!! :p;)

And to me, if it ain't belt fed, it isn't a REAL machine gun!! I even think the Minimi is a girl's machine gun. If it isn't even 7.62 mm then it is really a toy!! :p;)
