Probably because they arent a "Traditional Law Enforcement Officer."

I personally wish more states would make legislations for special police positions. I think security guards in areas such as hospitals, malls, schools (such as colleges), high crime areas, etc... should be upgraded/replaced by special police.

BTW, the LA Special Police don't sound like a bad gig to me.;)

Other than having to live in LA of course.

From what I hear it's a pretty good gig! They get into some sh*t too sometimes because they're still responsible for areas in South LA (PC term for South Central LA).

A police officer has jurisdiction in his township, a deputy sheriff in the entire county...on or off duty. They can arrest the DB on sight...a misdemeanor was committed in their presence. Special Police cannot do this

I until a few months ago was classified as a special police officer class II (now im "interim full-time officer") aka the same thing with a fancy term.


When im working I have jurisdiction in my entire city. I also routinely back up the neighboring cities. Can do all the same things the regular police do, in NJ its usually just a fancy legal term for "part-timer."

In NJ the special II's have identical on-duty powers and are employed by municpal departments as either seasonal police or part-timers. The academy is slightly shorter(usually only 20 hours or so). My time as a special I drove my own police car and took the identical calls that the regulars did, the only difference was literally I didnt get benefits(was paid) and couldnt carry as a leo off-duty. Worked 42 hours a week year round and all that jazz....Watch with the assumptions the term applications varies from state to state :rolleyes:

Class I special officers are much different. They do have powers of arrest, but are very limited (only for disorderly persons offenses) and can enforce traffic(which is rare) they are not armed with a firearm and only undergo 80 hours of training. They also are employed by municipal departments usually in the summer, for court officer duty, or crowd control at events. They can be paid or unpaid.

If a special police sees a douchebag hit his wife at an intersection that is NOT in his limited jurisdiction (specific geographical area), he can do nothing about it other than call 911 like every other civilian.

Citizens arrest is generally limited to felonies...if a citizen tries to arrest someone for a misdemeanor (which the special police would be doing out of their jurisdiction), the "arrestee" can sue for false imprisonment.

As for the part where you say if a Special Police Officer see someone hit their wife or a crime committed in his prescene.... its not different than a city cop here in NORTH CAROLINA... After a City officer is beyond 1 mile of his jurisdiction he can't do nothing either other than give the guy a well deserved *** kicking.. Not much different... Infact if you consider the areas we are protecting, then its actually a HUGE area

Also folks are getting our special police confused a bit verses what other special police is apparently in LA..

Special Police has Full Police Authority on any property in possession or in control of by the person(s), government agency (federal or state), or private organizations it is contracted by. Police Powers extended to statewide when the crime is committed on said contracted property and or during a hot pursuit.

In North Carolina any city police officer who is outside their One Mile Jurisdiction of the city limits becomes a joe blow civilian as well. With only Deputy Sheriffs and State police officers with "anywhere" authority... The only difference with us than the city is we do not have the one mile extended authority, but we can work anywhere in the state and our powers just like them extended as far as it needs to as long as it ocurred within our jurisdiction.

Now why us or any city police officer in North Carolina have such a restricted setup , thats the good old F-ed up State of North Carolina.

So in order for you guys to dictate that a Special Police officer atleast in NC is just a little better than a Security Guard, then really guys our City Police Officers are no better...

I am not argueing but I believe that it was important to bring up the fact that there is a big difference between our idea of Special Police and what he was refering to.
