Special Police or Company police get their power from Chapter 74E of the North Carolina General Statues, called "Company Police Act". This act ensures a minimum level of integrity, proficiency, and competence among company police agencies and company police officers. To achieve this purpose, the General Assembly found that a company police program needed to be established. As part of the Company Police Program, the Attorney General is given the authority to certify an agency as a company police agency and to commission an individual as a company police officer.
Once you are commissioned as a company police officer, you will have met the minimum standard required for employment and certification as a law enforcement officer in North Carolina, including completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Training course required of any other officer. You will receive law enforcement certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Once you have been officially sworn in by attesting to an oath of office, you will receive your commission from the Attorney General and be governed by his office. This commission will give you, as a company police officer, the same subject matter jurisdiction as other sworn law enforcement officers to make arrest for both felonies and misdemeanors, as well as to charge for infractions. Your powers, however, will be subject to strict territorial jurisdiction limitations.
