An investigation has started into an incident at the Prime Minister's XI cricket match at Canberra's Manuka Oval in which a woman was bitten by a police dog.

Police say she was bitten on the forearm after she approached the dog from behind and tried to pat it.

Police say the dog is part of the ACT K9 unit and was sitting with its trainer before the incident.

She has been treated by first aid staff.

The woman, thought to be aged between 25 and 35, was bitten on the forearm when she tried to pat the dog, which was alongside its police handler at Manuka Oval, police said.

ACT Policing is using the incident to warn people to be wary of the highly-trained canines and not to view them as friendly pets.

"She approached the dog from behind whilst the dog was seated on the hill and attempted to pat the animal," a police spokesman said.

"The animal was surprised and reacted to the approach. It turned around and bit her on the forearm."

The woman was given medical treatment at the ground, he said.

It was unclear if she actually touched the dog.

The spokesman said the dog did not pose a danger to the public, but encouraged people to use caution around all police dogs.

"They're a working dog, they're not a home pet," he said.

"Normally we use them in violent conflicts, area searches and search warrants.

"It's an unfortunate incident, but also a timely reminder."

Ha! I will pass that on.

Actually a k-9 mauled, ...um I mean effected the arrest of...some robbers the other day in Sydney after theyheld up a bowling club (lawn bowls - old people sort of bowling).

They made a point of saying that the dog gave one of the offenders a good chew and the offender has been charged with animal cruelty after he punched and kicked the dog. The reporter went on to say the dog was not harmed and had a few days off after the incident.

They did the typical interview with one of the old ladies at the bowls club and they told her that the dog bit someone. She replied, "Good. I hope it had good bite." :D

And during the press conference the lead detective made comment that the dog got an extra large bone that night. :D:D

Glad to know the pup is doing okay. It sounds to me like someone got what she deserved. What would have happened if she walked up behind an armed officer and surprised him?
