GPS Tracking Devices

Hello all.

I'm currently working on an academic article relating to the attachment of GPS tracking devices to suspects' cars by police officers. There have been several recent cases involving the use of these GPS devices; most notably, a recent case out of the 7th Circuit where the members of a rural Wisconsin police department attached a GPS tracking device to the bottom of a suspected meth user's car.

Does anyone know where I can get statistical information concerning how widespread-- or confined-- the use of these tracking devices is in police departments across the United States?

I doubt you'll be able to find any statistical data on that, its going to be with large agencies who can afford a technology division or have people who can monito implenent and use them successfully.

In Texas it can only be done with a court order.

Try checking with the Justice Department, I know that DEA and a few other Federal agencies use them... I doubt they'll tell you how much or how often but they do use them.

We do them. In SOME cases, it requires a court order. As large as we are, you would still be hard-pressed to get any statistics on their use.

...also, FWIW, the GPS devices that you are referring to are OLD SCHOOL. :D

I think you would be better off to gather statistics of the GPS tracking devices that the US Government has been forcing doctor offices to implant into all the people... THAT is a FAR more interesting statistic!

There is the court case with the mobster who claimed DEA planted a tracker in his *** while he was knocked out in surgery. He actually filed a lawsuit, claiming it happened.

DEA, of course, denied it, but really, who knows what happened. :D

Well as long as it didn't work it's way loose out of the crack. Heaven forbid some kind of watery flood washes it down the drains.
