Use of force continuum

Has anyone attended FLETC recently?

I have heard of a new continuum they use, instead of it working off of 1-5 (Or 1-6 depending on UoF continuum) levels it was a circle of tools with the officer in the middle. Basically it says an officer can reach into that circle and grab whatever he/she feels is necessary.

If anyone has more info on it feel free to correct me.

Yes, that is what I was referring to. It looksmore like a pie chart, with different uses-of-force taking up a slice. You just prceed straight to the use-of-force to get the job done.

Ya, it's good, I just found it on a few PDF documents through Google! Of course I also once found a complete Rail VACIS training powerpoint and policy on Google too and that was supposed to be all classified at the time but some goofball posted it on the internet :rolleyes: So, we're good.

Chewy, I think that one may be outdated.

When I was at FLETC last January for FTO school, the instructors did a briefing on what exactly is being taught in the LMPT Basic course so we would have up to date info. in case the trainee was trying to b.s. their way through.
(trainee = "That's the way FLETC is teaching it now.....") I digress, as that is for another thread.....;)

Anyway, the instructor pointed out that all of those cool color posters of the UoF model throughout the campus had been removed because FLETC had re-vamped their philosophy. I don't know what or if they even replaced with a new model. The instructor explained that UoF is being taught with the word "because".

I'll put a call back to my agency rep. at FLETC to confirm, as I have a trainee coming in next month and I want to make sure that I am current.

If you find a newer one let me know.... I use them doing my range instruction classes. For CBP that's the most recent one we use although we do have a new Firearms and Use of Force Policy coming out this spring/summer so it may change with that.


As far as what they learn at FLETC we don't really care, we generally just tell them to unlearn it because FLETC is wrong on a lot of things. It's kind of a pain in the rear for Firearms because down there they have them do the slide back and forth five thousand times to clear the guns then they have them still sticking their fingers into the open port to physically feel the chambers empty. Then they are telling the field not to teach the same stuff??? It's a pain in the rear for us to "un-learn" them and re-brainwash them the correct way. We try to get them to stream line everything so as to have as few steps as possible thereby saving time and hopefully saving their life if they every DO get into a shooting and have a jam or have to reload etc, but FLETC still does all this extra crap that isn't needed. I know they do it for safety but you have to trust them at some point to do it the correct way why not just start at the begining doing it correctly?

I was down there last April and they used the one chewy posted. Of course with FLETC being a government agency, who knows what they are doing on any given day.
