    My first funeral

That involved a line of duty death. My academy class went to the church where Detective Jarrod Shivers funeral took place. I don't really have much to say except that there wasn't anyone in the chapel that didn't have tears running down their faces .. myself included.

God I hope that I never have to do that again :(

I have told all my friends and co-workers that should I die in the line of duty that they can mourn at the funeral but afterwords I want someone to have a cookout with copious amounts of keg beer.
To honor my memory the way I live and not what I do for 45 hours a week. I think a police funeral is a well deserved tribute but I would rather be known for my fun loving side.

But they are sad and I try to attend as many as I can out of respect.

I've been to a few - one for a close friend. It feels like I got punched in the gut each time. And when they play taps, forget it . . .

The hardest part for me is when dispatch calls them over the radio .... County to unit # ____ and repeats this 3 times. Followed by.." county clear".

I've been to 2, and I pray I never have to go to another. Both were good friends of mine.

Been to 3 or 4 for LOD, 1 was NYSP, 1 military NYPD member, and 1 or 2 NYPD. Additionally gone in uniform to at least 3 others that had some type of relationship to an NYPD member. I've only been a cop for 3 1/2 years.

When a military person or lawman/woman falls, especially in combat or in the line of duty it's a very sad and emotional occasion for everyone attending the burial, including members of the honor guard.
When in the MP's I was asigned to permanent honor guard duty and was a member of a 4-5 man rifle squad which fired a 3 volley salute in honor of the deceased. Back then the wife, husband, mother, father or funeral director could request a military funeral from the commandant of the closest military base and and a team made up of a bugler, 4-5 riflemen and a top sergeant who was in command and gave the folded US flag to the mother, wife or next of kin to the fallen military man or woman.
I've seen many tears run down the cheeks of every member of that team, even on those of the hardened combat bugler while playing taps.
This was a tough assignment, but seeing a smile through the tears of a mother or widow when given the flag was sufficient reward.

I have been to seven funerals while I was in the army. Four of them were my friends and it never got easier. I hope I will never have to attend another.

In my Military & LE Career, I have been to approximately 75+ funerals in which I served in an Honor Guard, Escort or friend to the family. They never get easier and there is never a "Dry Eye"!!!!! All of our lost friends are "HEROES", to their Families, Friends and all that knew them!!!! God rest there SOULS.

    RIP Detective Shivers.
I went to 3 in 3 months and it was heartbreaking. But what a tribute they were to the fine men and woman they were.
