    'Theft-Proof' Police Car Stolen

A high tech, theft-proof £75,000 police car was stolen in Berlin - after officers left it unlocked with the key in the ignition.

The special BMW, which features high-tech surveillance equipment and sophisticated electronic locks and immobilisers to make it theft proof, was the pride of the Berlin police force.

But it was stolen in the city's Wedding district when two officers jumped out to chase a joy-rider on foot after he had abandoned a stolen car.

The criminal got away and when the officers went back they found the expensive BMW gone.

The pair are facing disciplinary action. Police chiefs say they have no leads on who may have stolen the car and are still looking for it.

I think disciplinary action is a bit harsh, what, were they supposed to wait to lock it carefully whilst the suspect escaped?

But if the thing has surveillance equipment can't they see who stole it? Doesn't it have GPS tracking? or some lojack equivalent? if not, I guess now they will consider installing that, when they find it.

That is probably the part they did wrong, not leaving it unlocked.

A theft-proof car is like a clog-proof toilet. Sooner or later, someone is going to look at it and think:
"I think I can beat this."

Which idiot decided to go and call the thing "theft proof?" That's why it got stolen! Honestly, any time you say that something can't be done, what's going to happen?

Lets see, the "unsinkable" Titanic. (Her sisters too.) ANYTHING idiot proof. New and better models of idiots are bred every day. Anything indestructible....

In hindsight, it probably would have been the right thing to do! :D

But seriously, I never get out without taking the keys minimum. For this exact reason. It takes maybe an extra second or two to take the keys out, and hours of paperwork and butt kicking if you don't and it turns out like this.

Generally you get an indication that the crooks are about to bail and run. My first thought at that moment is get ready to dismount, get seat belt off as soon as possible/practical and get ready to get those keys out and run.
