Murder Charge Officer Found Dead

A police inspector charged with the murder of his wife is believed to have killed his mother-in-law before killing himself, prompting calls for an investigation into why he was out on bail.

Garry Weddell, 47, was due to stand trial later this year. He was accused of strangling his wife with a cable tie and faking her suicide.

But the body of the Metropolitan Police inspector was discovered this weekend in a field at Broomhills Shooting Club in Markyate, Hertfordshire.

It has been suggested that mother-in-law Traute Maxfield was due to give evidence against him.

The body of the 70-year-old was found the same day about 10 miles from the shooting club at a house in Gustard Wood. Police tried to contact her after discovering Weddell's body. She was listed as his next-of-kin.

Mike Penning, Conservative MP for Hemel Hempstead, called for an investigation into how Weddell was let out of custody - despite the objections of the Crown Prosecution Service.

Weddell's wife Sandra, 44, was found dead in the garage of their family home in Lancot Avenue, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, on January 31 last year.

Post-mortem tests revealed that the nurse and exam invigilator was strangled with a cable tie.

A hearing at Luton Magistrates' Court in June was told that Weddell discovered his wife was having an affair and wanted a divorce.

He feared he would lose custody of their three children and his home and decided to kill her, the court was told Post-mortem tests revealed that a cable tie was used to strangle the mother of three.
