Iphone Experiences?

Im deciding on whether to purchase and Iphone. It has some super cool features, but I have also heard some horror stories. Im also having a hard time convincing my wife to spend $400-$500 bucks for a new phone. Are ya'll happy with your Iphones? Also, what kind of plans are ya'll getting as it relates to monthly charges/minutes. Thanks.

about the iphone from what i've heard is

cons:
-touch screen for buttons (can't feel the buttons, have to look down when typing things in ex phone #'s etc)
-touch screen smudges quite easily
-need a new battery? have to send it back to apple (the whole phone)
-lack of 3rd party software/applications (only apple can develop updates for phone software and applications)
-Use limited to certain carriers (at&t, but may have changed, i'm not completely sure)

pros:
-wifi and bluetooth
-supposed 8 hour talk life (sounds a bit streched though)
-8gb space, not bad at all
