Stop Thief! GM's OnStar system could soon halt stolen cars

Stop Thief! GM's OnStar system could soon halt stolen cars

DETROIT (AP) -- Say some clown steals your car from the parking deck at work.

If it's equipped with General Motors' OnStar service, he could be in for a big surprise and you could get a little revenge - and even see your car again.

Starting with about 20 models for 2009, the service will be able to slowly halt a car that is reported stolen, and the radio may even speak up and tell the thief to pull over because police are watching.

I was in a pursuit last year involving a GMC P/U that was equipped with OnStar. The OnStar operator was patched through to the radio and we were able to track the vehicle turn by turn. We ended up catching them about 15 minutes after the theft!

I would think since Onstar can access the vehicle's body computer to unlock doors, track vehicle, etc. that it wouldn't be that big a leap to have it access the engine control module and shut down the ignition. I'm surprised they haven't done it already to stop theft.

Works for me as long as I don't have to pay a mechanic $600 to "unlock" the electrical system so I drive it again.

I think it's an awesome idea, but does anyone else get the creeps knowing that a company can do anything to your car without your say so?

I typically just put on my tinfoil hat and they can't touch me or my car

You think it's paranoid to be concerned about some minimum wage receptionist being in charge of the mechanical workings of your car?

I am going to reserve judgement on this

My three past interactions with ONSTAR dont leave me a warm huggy touchy feeling about this. Of course, I dont plan on buying anything with ONSTAR either.
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL

There are obvious benefits with things such as OnStar or Lojack, however they are only major benefits if the theft has just occurred. The longer the time lapse, the greater the chance that the vehicle has already been abandoned and no suspects will be found.

Also, the smarter thieves know how to disable OnStar systems, but that's not really a discussion for the public area.

I'm much more concerned about crazy, agenda-driven, far-left, liberal social facists running my country than I am of someone being able to disable my car if it is stolen ... ;)

Wait... you think I'm a liberal? You really freaking think that

    Lets see......

    Texas resident CHECK
    Gun owner and lover CHECK
    Against Gay marriage CHECK
    Deeply religious CHECK

I don't know, I've been called a lot of things, but I've never had anyone insinuate that I was a left wing lib lol. What baffles me is that people that are hardcore conspiracy theorist tend to be back wood conservatives that fear the government and the MAN.

I just don't want some high drop out operating the functions of my car. I think of my car as my home, and I want it to be outside the reaches of anyones input.

Now explain why you think I'm crazy or paranoid? I'm curious, I really think you just kind of jumped on the band wagon.
