So I leave my house to go have dinner with a friend a little after 7PM last night. As I'm driving down the street, I'm about 200 ft from an intersection, when I spot what looks to be a Chicago PD cruiser just sitting in the middle of the street. I look around and see a smashed up van just a few feet away.
I figure it's just a "PD only" accident and the coppers are taking care of it. As I get closer, I realized that something just didn't look right. The officers were sitting oddly in their seats; one with his head leaning to the left, and the one in the drivers seat with his left arm out the window.
I then realized that they weren't investigating the collision, they WERE the collision. From my original angle I could only see the drivers side of the squad car, which looked untouched. The passengers side on the other hand, was completely totaled. It still really didn't hit me for a few seconds what really happened until I saw the first district car arrive seconds later.
I then exited my car and proceeded to semi-jog towards the officers to offer some help, but in that 10 seconds, about a dozen squad cars came screaming from every direction. At that point, I figured it would be better for me to just stay on the sidelines.
I saw the officers run towards the car and try to open the drivers side door, but to no avail. It took the FD about 3 minutes to get there. They had to use the Jaws and cut the top of the car off. Both officers looked to be in pretty bad shape.
What really amazed me though, was to see the teamwork between the officers, firefighters and other rescue personnel to save two of their own. You could barely see the car from where I was standing due to the amount of cops huddled around the car behind the fire guys. And as soon as the officers were in the ambulances, those guys and girls were in their cars ready to escort their brothers.
To see that type of camaraderie in full swing has really made me proud of my career and life choice. You hear about it all the time, but you really don't understand it until you see it firsthand.
I just want to say GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU for doing what you do, and to please say a little prayer for these officers.
Sorry for the long post.
