Luck is for those without skill.

I do advocacy work for families with disabilities. There are programs through pharmacuetical companies who will provide medications at a significantly reduced cost or free to families in need and it sounds as if you fit that category. Your family should fit into the MA or CHIP program as well to be a secondary payer for medical bills. It can take a lot to find those programs but they are out there. See if you're doctor can hook you up with an ombudsman for the county you live in to find help for your family and yes you should be making much more for the work that you do.

With your wages have you checked into medicaid. They might cover her meds. Also some drug companies have programs that if you contact them and explain your situation (wages, wifes medical problems, etc) they offer reduction in the perscription costs.
I'm sure you have already checked into these, but thought I would mention it anyway.
Good luck.
