Things you would like to be able to say in Spanish

I've been working on my Spanish for a little while, doing some self study through podcasts (there are some pretty good free ones out there is anyone is interested) and language CDs. I've gotten to the point that I can ask some general information gathering questions.

The programs I am using are not geared towards law enforcement, but I can order dinner and ask where the tourism office is. I have plenty of friends who are native Spanish speakers who have been helping me, but I need ideas for phrases to ask them to translate for me.

What are some phrases that officers use regularly that would be helpful to learn?

    Thanks for any ideas

A few phrases I can think of would be:
    Sit down.
    Relax.
    Hands behind your back.
Where are you going_____(replace with morning, afternoon, or evening.)

That's all I can really think of.

They teach us some Spanish in the academy, enough that we can do felony stops on someone or get some basic information from them.

A few of the things I regularly use are:

Manos arriba! = Get your hands up

No se mueve! = Don't move

    Alto! = Stop

Tienne un licencia? = Do you have a license
Tienne un I.D.? = Do you have ID?

Apague el motor. = Turn off the car.

Baja del carro. = Get out of the car.

    Quedese aya = Stay there

    Parase = Stand up

    Voletese = Turn around

    Sientete
    = Sit down

These are some of the more common phrases I use. I don't remember everything from the academy, but enough to muddle through.

I've also picked up some new phrases along the way, such as being able to tell someone their car is being impounded for 30 days because it's against the law to drive without a license, and ordering a carne asada taco with cheese and no onions. :D
I used to care. Now I take a pill for that.

When I was working, I would have liked to have known the phrase:

    "You need to assimilate".

Now that I am retired, I'd like to know how to say:

"Illegals should return home and make their own country better rather than steal US tax dollars."

BTW, you can learn more Spanish than you have by walking around in a Lowe's store... you can't see the merchandise for the huge signs written in both english and spanish...

I thought this was the "United" States?!?...

Sorry for the vent... just came back from buying a few yard supplies.... maybe I should just hire that guy standing on the corner?

I think I'd rather they learn some things to say in English.

This is my country, damnit. If you're going to live here, speak MY language. I wouldn't move to Russia and expect them to speak to me in English.

Thanks for the great response, that is way more than I expected. I'm gonna print those out.

I do get a little self conscious trying to speak Spanish around my Spanish speaking friends, but I was very proud the first time I could order off the taco truck by myself

I did pick up a few phrases at work, when I was a Humane Officer I could tell people "You have 5 days to get rid of you chickens" and "you dog has too many fleas". Usually I could find an 8 year old to help translate.

    Thanks again

I hate to pick, but.... And my spanish is far from perfect.

    [QUOTE=smcc360;803734]A few I've found useful:

Cuyo (de quien) cohe (coche or carro) es esto (este)?: Whose car is this?

Que (cual) es su nombre?: What is your name?

Tiene un tarjeta verde (correct but easier to say La Mica)?: Do you have a green card?

Donde (es or esta) su tarjeta verde?: Where is your green card?

Tiene armes (armas) ?: Do you have any weapons?

Donde esta su arma? No alcance para el.
: Where is your weapon? Don't reach for it.[I]

Que es el nombre de famiglia (familia) aqui?: What is the family name here? (I don't understand the question however? do you mean quien viven aqui?=who lives here?)

Quantas personas vive (viven) aqui?: How many people live here?

    Venga aqui.
: Come here. (or Venga para aca=come over here you can also shorten it to venga paca.)

Vaya ahi (para aya).: Go there. (go over there)

    Venga a me (con migo).
: Come with me. (the other way says "go to me")

    Hablo Habla Ingles?
: Do you speak English? (Hablo Ingles means "I speak spanish" or in a question your asking them "do I speak spanish")

Ocho anos? Por que no hablo Ingles? (no habla, again your asking them "why don't I speak spainsh" Yo no vivo en la Republica Dominicana, si yo hablo Espanol.: Eight years? Why do you not speak English? I don't live in the Dominican Republic, but I speak Spanish.

Ponga sus manos atras su espalda.: Put your hands behind your back.

Usted esta detenido.( or Abajo arrestado)
    : You are under arrest.

Por que yo decir (digo).: Because I say so.

Sientese junto a ("con" sounds better) su abogado.: Sit down next to your lawyer.

Just remember that using the "Tu form" is considered familiar and some older Latino's might take offense to you speaking to them like they were beneath you. It just makes interviews easier when you are polite IMO.

Is it "el Taser," or "la Taser?" :D

And, more seriously, how would one say, "What drugs have you done/taken?"
