Three NYPD officers are being called heroes after they brought a 74-year-old Staten Island man back to life after he went into cardiac arrest at D-Day ceremonies on the USS Intrepid Wednesday morning.
Authorities say Gabriel Chiayone collapsed about 10 feet in front of three officers from the NYPD's Emergency Service Unit at around 11 a.m.
Chiayone reportedly stopped breathing and had no pulse when the hero officers sprang into action.
Sergeant Anthony Lisi of ESU Truck 5 performed CPR on the victim, while detectives Matthew Brander and John Zhoroff, both of ESU Truck 6, assisted with the defibrillator.
Chiayone was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition.
The ceremony was to welcome the Intrepid to Staten Island and to honor the allies who stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944, is planned at the Homeport Pier.
