(CNN) – Chuck Norris died this morning in a Dallas hospital after suffering fatal injuries as a result of a helicopter crash late last night.
The action hero star and martial arts expert, born Carlos Ray NORRIS, was 67.
Mr Norris was travelling in a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter filming an episode of an upcoming television series that he was taking part in for the Cartoon Network. The helicopter experienced difficulty and crash landed into a vacant block only two miles from the nearby Baylor University Medical Centre.
Emergency services were on the scene within minutes and found Mr Norris, his camera operator, Andy Baker, sound operator, Luke Bowden, and two unnamed air crew, trapped in the upside down helicopter. Both Baker and Bowden were announced dead on arrival but it is believed that Mr Norris was alive when found, however died shortly after arriving at Baylor University Medical Centre.
It is unclear at this time, but it is believed that Mr Norris suffered severe head and internal injuries. The pilot and co-pilot are also believed to have died in the accident. Their names have not been released at this time.
An autopsy is believed to be scheduled for Tuesday, according to the Dallas Medical Examiner's Office.
"We are saddened and heartbroken by the death of an American hero. Our sympathy goes out to the families of those tragically taken this morning. And to the fans of Mr Norris. He was an inspiration to millions and will be remembered forever." Lt Vernon Hale of Dallas Police Department Media Relations, said in a press conference held early this morning.
“This will be trying time for those close to Mr Norris and in the days to come, we shall all remember him fondly not only as a movie star, an action hero, and a martial arts expert, but also as an inspiration, a leader of good men, and of course for his great charity work. He will be missed,” said Kenneth Nicol Jr, a Norris family representative.

A life to remember
A native of Ryan, Oklahoma, Norris is has two younger brothers, Wieland (deceased) and Aaron.
Norris was born to an alcoholic father who was half Irish and half Cherokee. Norris's mother is also half Irish and half Cherokee. Norris is very proud of his Native American heritage, and frequently referred to his origins on his hit show Walker, Texas Ranger.
When Norris was 10, his parents divorced, and he later relocated to Prairie Village, Kansas, and then Torrance, California with his mother and brothers. Norris describes his childhood as downbeat. He was nonathletic, shy, and scholastically mediocre. Other children taunted him about his mixed ethnicity.
Chuck Norris finished high school and soon married his girlfriend, Diane Holechek. In 1958 Norris joined the United States Air Force as an Air Policeman and was sent to Osan Air Base, South Korea. It was in South Korea that Norris acquired the nickname Chuck and began his training in Tang Soo Do (tangsudo), an interest that would lead to black belts several forms of martial arts, including the founding of Chun Kuk Do (“Universal Way”) form and the education associations United Fighting Arts Federation and "Kickstart", formerly "Kick Drugs Out of America", a school – based program intended to give at-risk children a focus point in life through the martial arts. When he returned to the United States he continued to act as an AP at March Air Force Base California. Norris was discharged in August of 1962. He worked for the Northrop Corporation and opened a chain of karate schools.
Norris used his martial arts expertise to star in action movies. In 1972 he starred opposite Bruce Lee in “Way of the Dragon”. This movie is credited as starting his movie stardom. He went on to star in such movies as Lone Wolf Mcquade, Missing In Action, and The Delta Force.
Norris made history in 1997 when he was the first Westerner in the documented history of Taekwondo to be given the rank of 8th
Degree Black Belt Grand Master. On July 1, 2000 he was presented the Golden Lifetime Achievement Award by the World Karate Union Hall of Fame.
Chuck Norris was a favorite actor of President George W. Bush. “He will be sure missed. He was a fine actor, a great man, and a proud Texan.” Said President Bush on hearing the news. “This country will miss him. I will miss him. My condolences to his family.”
Norris lived in north Dallas and owned a ranch between Navasota and Anderson, Texas. He also owned a small residence in California for when he did films or television shows. The show he was working on at the time of his death was a Cartoon Network special on the life of Chuck Norris in cartoon form. It is unsure if the project will go ahead.
