    Ipmba

I just finished a week long IMPBA police cyclist course. It's probably the most physically demanding thing I've ever done. We rode at least 18.5 - 19 miles every day. Today we had the firearms quals which was very tough. We had to ride all out for about a mile, dismount and run 40-50 yards. Engage a target for 6 rounds. Run 15 yards and shoot another 6 rounds. Run 10 yards and shoot down 6 pepper poppers. All of this after riding 10 miles and doing many hills.

I came into this course in OK shape but I was no where near as conditioned as I should have. I struggled in the hills. Every time I came up on a hill it was like somebody hooked a boat anchor on me. But other than that I did pretty good. I had a good crash while trying to climb some steps. I fell right into a sticker bush. It looks like I got into a fight with a cat...and lost. :D

It was a loooong week but good training.

ah bike school. I remember having to do a half mile "chase" then drop the bike and shoot a course. I went through so many friggin rounds because I was so out of it.

Have to pick up a quarter off the ground?

Nope we didn't have to pick up a quarter. Our firearm quals were similiar to a chase but our scenario is we are going to help an Officer in trouble.

I went through the 40hr course a couple of years ago. We didn't do the firearms training you mentioned. We did some long rides, but your course sounds tougher than the one I went through :D .

Darrin, welcome to the club and congrats on making it through the course. I went through Ipmba training last year. I thought I was in good shape, little did I know. Did you learn how to ride down the stairs? That was a b*tch. I will say, what I learned in that training saved my life this summer when I almost became one with a public bus. Good luck with your new unit. If you have any ?????sssssss you can pm me.

Congratulations on getting a bike team. We tried to get our department to start a bike patrol, which given our climate would seem like a no-brainer, but our head-shed didn't follow through completely. They did buy some bikes though...

Yeah we rode down steps. That was very intimidating at first. We went down a flight of 10 steps. My first attempt I got all jacked up. I had to be "rescued" by the intructor.

    Hey Darin!

I went through the IPMBA course too. We didn't get to do any of the fun stuff (arrest & control, firearms etc. etc.) but there are advanced courses we can continue to take. What are you riding? We got the Fuji's. I have been looking for the Smith & Wesson FS. Apparenlty, they're not easy to find. Maybe we should get a thread of Police bikes up. Hmmmm

Q from citizen: How do you bike officers transport people to jail??
A: Cuff 'em to the rack and ride!!

My Chief got us some really good equipment. Our bikes are police spec Trek bikes. Double wall rims and good components. After the first day we realized that the tires wasn't any good for any type of off roading. Chief went out and got us new rear tires.

Our uniforms are Olympic bike patrol made out of Coolmax. Chief spared no expense even on the padded bike shorts.
